CASPER — Sheridan’s Wyatt Avery won by technical fall Friday in folkstyle wrestling in the Cadet 145 bracket. On Thursday, Avery won the championship for freestyle in the Cadet 145. He is undefeated with a 5-0 record so far this weekend and is hoping for another championship Saturday.
Sheridan High School sophomore Avery won against Andrew Nicholson in the USA State Wrestling championships Friday in Casper. Avery had several pinning opportunities but Nicholson kept running out of bounds. It was a tough match as the two battled. Avery had many takedowns and won by a technical fall.
“I was trying to be smart and very technical throughout my match,” Avery said. “Andrew is a very good opponent and is very strong. It was a fun, tough match to wrestle.”
Coach Dave Avery said that technical focus was what he was looking for from his wrestler.
“After yesterday’s win, I was expecting to see similar results. We ended up with a technical fall which we are happy with, we would rather have a pin but a win is a win,” the coach said.
Avery has qualified to wrestle on Team Wyoming to go to nationals at Fargo, N.D., for Greco and freestyle wrestling in July.
He has not decided if he will participate due to all of the athletic camps he plans to attend this summer.
On Thursday, the Sheridan Young Guns had a few championships in freestyle. Kelten Crow took first in the Bantam 65, Hunter Goodwin placed first in the Novice 8 and Wyatt Avery took first in Cadet 145. On Friday, Reese Osborne also won Novice 70 for folkstyle.
