Wyoming Baroque @ Sheridan College
Apr 6 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

SHERIDAN — Wyoming Baroque will perform in the atrium of the Edward A. Whitney Academic Center at Sheridan College on Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m.

Wyoming Baroque brings together the country’s most dynamic, historically informed instrumentalists to Wyoming. They will play instruments set up to baroque-era specifications, including the use of natural gut strings and lower-pitched tuning. Performers are coming from San Francisco, Indianapolis, Washington, D.C., and North Carolina, to present a free concert at Sheridan College.

The repertoire for the concert explores tensions between Italian and French aesthetics of the 17th century and Francois Couperin’s reconciliation of the rift with his allegorical composition “L’Apotheose de Lully” (1725). The program concludes with a performance of an original composition by Dr. Mark Bergman, director of strings at Sheridan College, entitled “Steampunk Baroque.” In the spirit of “L’Apotheose de Lully,” this work synthesizes the diverse aesthetics of European baroque music, punk rock and 19th century art songs.

The concert is free and open to the public.

For more information, call Bergman at 674-6446, ext. 3010 or by email to mbergman@sheridan.edu.

“It is significant the Occidental Jam has lasted 10 years and is still going strong,” said Lynn Young, an organizer of the event and an original founder of the jam.

“It’s not just about music, but it’s about a viable community coming together to celebrate weekly fellowship and caring for each other,” he continued. “We have decided to name our celebration ‘More Than Music’ to recognize the jam’s significance to our community.”

Shows will include Michael Martin Murphy on June 11 and bluegrass legend David Parmley and Cardinal Tradition on July 31.
