Vacation Bible School set for June 21-24 @ Sheridan County YMCA

SHERIDAN— The annual Vacation Bible School “Counting on God” camp will be held June 21-24 at the Sheridan County YMCA.

Children in the 4-year-old age group will attend the camp from 9-11 a.m. and children ages 5-10 will attend the VBS camp from 9-11:45 a.m.

The theme is “Barnyard Roundup — Jesus Gathers us Together” and is filled with crafts, fun team-building games, Bible songs and stories and tasty treats.

Registration is available online at www.vbsmate.com/countingongodcamp or in the YMCA lobby.

Volunteers are needed for the camp. There will be drawing for daily prizes for youth 11-18 who volunteer.

YMCA Theater Camp attendees to perform “The Artistocats, Jr.” @ WYO Theater

SMH offering free classes each month @ Sheridan Memorial Hospital

SHERIDAN — Sheridan Memorial Hospital will offer two free classes each month. While the classes are offered at no charge, those planning to attend are asked to register.

The classes are a prenatal class for expectant moms and dads and partners and a breastfeeding and newborn class.

The prenatal class will take place the first Monday of every month from 6-8 p.m. in Sheridan Memorial Hospital Conference Rooms A and B.

The breastfeeding and newborn class is meant for anyone interested in breastfeeding and newborn care and will be held the third Monday of each month from 6-8 p.m. at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. A pediatrician also attends each class to talk a little about newborn care as well as a guest speaker who educates on car seat safety.

Register for either class by calling Sheridan Women’s Clinic at 672-2522 or Sheridan Memorial Hospital’s Women’s Health Services at 672-1110.

Groups to host Kids Fishing Day @ Porcupine Ranger Station

SHERIDAN — The Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming Game and Fish Department and Trout Unlimited will host Kids Fishing Day on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Porcupine Ranger Station pond.

“This is an opportunity for kids to be involved in an outdoor activity and perhaps create a lifelong passion for fishing,” said Bighorn National Forest wildlife biologist Beth Bischoff.

Youth ages 13 and younger are invited to attend with a parent or guardian. Children age 13 years and younger who are Wyoming residents do not need a fishing license. Non-resident children 13 and younger must have an adult with a valid Wyoming fishing license on site. State regulations and creel limits apply.

This event is free.

Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and provide assistance or instructions on casting techniques, knot tying, angler ethics and fish conservation and ecology.

Participants should be prepared for fishing and mountain weather and are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle, rain gear, layered clothing, snacks, coolers with ice for transporting fish, sunblock and insect repellent.

Fishing bait will be provided. Fishing rods will be available for use by children who do not have their own, but participants are asked to bring rods if possible.

Porcupine Ranger Station is located on Forest Service Road 13 off U.S. Highway 14A.

Broncs hosting mini camp at Scott Field @ Homer Scott Field

The 10th annual football camp will run July 18-20 from 5-8 p.m. each day. Young Broncs up to eighth grade will participate in the camp from 5-6 p.m., with high school players taking the field from 6-8 p.m.

The camp will be taught by SHS football staff with an emphasis on drills, fundamentals and technique.

The cost for the camp is $15, which includes a Broncs shirt.

Registrations open at 4:30 p.m. Monday, and each player will need proof of insurance to participate.

Sheridan County Museum to host Tidbit Tuesday @ Sheridan County Museum

SHERIDAN — Tidbit Tuesday presentations will continue on July 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Sheridan County Museum.

The topic for the event will be the game of polo in Sheridan County. The two-hour workshop will include a story and a fun hands-on activity that shares history with children.

The program is for children ages 4-10, but older children are welcome.

There is no cost to attend. An adult or responsible teenager must accompany all children. To reserve a spot or for more information call the Sheridan County Museum at 675-1150.

Antelope Butte Summer Festival begins July 22 @ Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation Area

SHERIDAN — The third annual Antelope Butte Summer Festival will include morning yoga, trail runs, mountain bike races, live music, vendors and kids activities.

The event will begin July 22 and goes through July 24. On-site camping is available.

Proceeds will go to the Antelope Butte Foundation, whose goal is to reopen and transform the dormant ski area into a four-season sustainable ski and recreation center.

The event will include family fun focused on livestock competitions featuring animals that were raised and shown by 4-H members, with cooking and crafts competitions for 4-H members and the community.

Unplug event to feature campout at Kendrick @ Kendrick Park

SHERIDAN — The next Unplug event of the summer will feature an overnight campout in Kendrick Park on Friday.
The event will include bluegrass music, s’mores and more. Attendees are encouraged to bring their instruments, flashlights, binoculars and camping gear for the bluegrass jam, flashlight tag and moon gazing. Breakfast will be provided for those who camp overnight.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Unplug is a partnership between the Sheridan Community Land Trust and Science Kids.

‘Teach-in’ to discuss roadless rules @ Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library

SHERIDAN — The Council for the Bighorn Range has joined in the Bighorn Forest Roadless Collaborative as a wilderness/roadless representative. The group will host a “teach-in” on Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library.

The discussion will include the history and effects of the Roadless Area Conservation Rule in the Bighorn National Forest and how the public can affect the recommendations on the remaining roadless areas on public lands across the Bighorn Mountains. The meeting is open to the public.

Since late 2012 when the Roadless Rule was affirmed, the Bighorn National Forest has been out of compliance with the rule. The collaborative is composed of members from industry, Wyoming State Forestry, agriculture, recreation, conservation, sportsmen and local government.

The collaborative will take comment from the public in forming its recommendations.

In the spring of 2017, the Bighorn Forest Roadless Collaborative will make recommendations to the governor for future management of these roadless areas.

Brinton to host music lecture, chuckwagon dinner @ Brinton Museum

BIG HORN — The Brinton Museum will host a two-part event Aug. 25 to celebrate the music of the American West.

Dr. Ariel Downing will present a free lecture at 6:30 p.m. about the history of popular cowboy songs and ballads from 1879 through the present. She will discuss their Mexican and Irish influences, too.

Following the lecture, at approximately 7:30 p.m., musical entertainment and a chuckwagon dinner will be featured. Tickets for the dinner cost $25 per person for nonmembers and $20 for members. Tickets for children ages 6-12 cost $15; children 5 and younger get in for free.

Library to host shred fest @ Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Public Library System, AARP Wyoming and Secure Shred Wyoming will host a free shredding event and informational session on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The informational session will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and will focus on protecting your devices from viruses, hacking and other threats. AARP Wyoming Associate State Director Tim Lockwood will lead the session.

The shred fest will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the library parking lot. Residents may drop off up to two banker boxes of papers to be shredded for free. Additional boxes will be accepted for $10 apiece.

Those planning to participate in the shred fest are asked to remove all bindings and clips from the papers, though paper clips and staples are OK to leave. The Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library is located at 335 W. Alger St.

Annual 5-year-olds birthday party set for Sept. 17 @ Sheridan Memorial Hospital

SHERIDAN ­­­— Sheridan Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will host the annual 5-year-old birthday party on Saturday from 10-11 a.m.

The event will be held on the back cafeteria patio area at the hospital. All children that were born in 2011 are invited to attend with their parents and siblings.

Activities will include face painting, balloons and the Shriner clowns will give fire engine rides.

Snacks and beverages will also be provided.

Parking will be available in the employee parking lot in the back of the hospital building.

‘UNPLUG: Mud, Bugs and Fish in Dayton’ set for Wednesday @ Scott Bicentennial Park

SHERIDAN — Unplug, a creative outdoor program for families, will host a hands-on experience with the Wyoming Game and Fish stream trailer on Wednesday from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

The stream trailer is an educational tool that demonstrates how the natural movement of streams and rivers work.

Attendees will learn about fish with Trout Unlimited, do a cool water quality experiment with Sheridan County Conservation District and get personal with water bugs with a local entomologist.
