Senior Center to host ‘Man Behind the Cheap Mask’ @ Sheridan Senior Center
May 5 @ 1:30 pm – May 7 @ 1:30 pm

SHERIDAN — The Young at Heart Players at the Sheridan Senior Center will produce the melodrama entitled “The Paper Bag Bandit Rides Again” or “The Man Behind the Cheap Mask” by Robert Swift.

The play will be performed May 5, 6 and 7 at 1:30 p.m.

What seems to be the question on everyone’s lips in the desert town of Goose Creek? Is it, “Who is that Masked Man?” Well…uh…no. It’s “Who in the world is in that paper bag?”

The play features a cast of 17 loony characters and a daffy plot guaranteed to keep a laugh on your lips.

Director Pat Tomsovic is excited to showcase a very talented group of thespians, both old and new to the stage. The melodrama is sponsored by Tandem Productions.

The cost to attend is a $2 suggested donation.

The Sheridan Senior Center is located at 211 Smith St.

Civic Theatre Guild to produce ‘Yankee Tavern @ Carriage House Theater
May 6 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

SHERIDAN — The Civic Theatre Guild will open Yankee Tavern, a play by Steven Dietz, at the Carriage House Theater on May 6 at 7:30 p.m.

“Yankee Tavern” is set in a run-down Manhattan bar, five years after the attacks of 9/11, while the memory of the event is still a fresh wound. The most frequent patron of the bar extols his vast array of conspiracy theories at the slightest prodding, and on this day, a stranger visits the bar, who seems to verify some of these theories specifically regarding 9/11.

This suspenseful mind-bender will have you laughing one minute and on the edge of your seat the next.

“This play really explores a lot of ground worth covering,” director Aaron Odom said. “Hopefully, the ideas put forth in this play will stick with the audiences for a long time after they’ve left the theater.”

The cast features John Goodell, Jennifer Reed, Spencer Walters and Josh Hanson. The show will run April 29-30 and May 1, 6-8, and 12-14 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students, seniors and active military and can be purchased in advance at the WYO Theater box office, online at wyotheater.com or 30 minutes prior to the show’s commencement at the Carriage House Theater box office.

The Carriage House Theater is located at 419 Delphi Ave.

Library to host writing workshop with Lori Howe on June 14 @ Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library
Jun 14 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

SHERIDAN — Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library will sponsor a free writing workshop by Lori Howe on June 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the Inner Circle.

Howe’s program, “All the Water in Wyoming: Poems and Personal Essays” will allow participants to write on the meanings of water in Wyoming, whether via poetry or personal essay. Your knowledge, memories and thoughts are the ink on the page in this workshop, which features a dedicated issue of “Clerestory: Poems of the Mountain West.”

When participants leave the workshop, they will have a strong framework and approach for writing creatively about matters of great importance to them as Wyoming citizens, drawing on their own knowledge and experience to add their voices critically and meaningfully to ongoing, community and state conversations — some, through the venue of publication.

Howe is the author of “Cloudshade: Poems of the High Plains” and “Voices at Twilight: A Poet’s Guide to Wyoming Ghost Towns.” She has taught English and creative writing workshops for the last decade at the University of Wyoming and Laramie County Community College.

She holds a bachelor’s in English and Spanish, a master’s in English, a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from UW and is a doctoral candidate in literacy studies at UW, with a focus on critical thinking skills and creativity for struggling writers.

She teaches workshops for the Wyoming Latina project and the Wyoming Writing Project, and has been a guest poet on Wyoming Public Radio. She is editor in chief of “Clerestory: Poems of the Mountain West,” an online literary magazine dedicated to showcasing the work of Wyoming writers.

“Water in Wyoming” is presented by the Wyoming Humanities Council as part of its ThinkWY Road Scholars Tours program. The Wyoming Humanities Council provides public humanities-based programs in partnership with local organizations and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities with additional support from private donors and the Wyoming Legislature.

The Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library is located at 335 W. Alger St.
