Saturday University: The Free One-Day College Education @ Sheridan College

Sheridan College will present “Saturday University: The Free One-Day College Education” on Feb. 8.

Members of the community are invited to go back to college for a day — minus the tests and late-night study sessions — as three professors from the University of Wyoming present lectures from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The day begins with free coffee and pastries followed by opening remarks.

The first session, “The thinking animal: A look back at comparative psychology in the 21st century,” will begin at 9 a.m.

The second lecture, “Making it home: Landscape photographs in the 19th-century West,” will begin at 10:15 a.m.

The final class, “Biodiversity inside and out: A look at life’s richness from Wyoming’s perspective,” will begin at 11:30 a.m.

The day will conclude with a lunch and conversation with the professors.

All activities are free and no pre-registration is required.

Saturday University is a collaborative program connecting popular UW professors with Wyoming residents sponsored by UW, the UW Foundation and the Wyoming Humanities Council.

Basics of Microsoft Word class for 50 and older @ Sheridan College Main Street

Sheridan College’s Center for Workforce and Community Education and the American Association of Community Colleges are presenting a series of classes for people age 50 and over.
Classes will be held the second Tuesday of each month starting in September and ending in June.
The class schedule is:
• Feb. 11 — basics of Microsoft Word
• March 11 — writing attention-grabbing resumes
• April 8 — successful interviews
• May 13 — critical thinking
• June 10 — providing “wow” customer service
All classes are free and will be held from 8-11 a.m. at Sheridan College Main Street, 171 N. Main St. Pre-registration is required.

The Wyoming Geriatric Education Center (WyGEC) will host an educational workshop on “End-of-Life Care” on Feb. 19 and 21.

The agenda will be the same for each day and the cost to attend either series is $50 for adults or $35 for students but the fee will be waived for Sheridan College nursing students.

The workshops will be presented at Sheridan College in the Whitney Presentation Hall from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The sessions will feature Education in Palliative and End-of-Life Care curriculum and breakfast, lunch and refreshments are included.

Speakers will include Brenda Mosher, Linda Stone-Soukup and Greg Marino.

Uncapped @ Sagebrush Community Art Center

SHERIDAN — The Sagebrush Community Art Center will host a special class “Uncapped” on Feb. 22.

This painting workshop is tailored to adults and children and will be taught by Tongue River High School art student Hannah Johnston.

Johnston will guide the class in a 20X16 painting with local artist Sonja Caywood serving as her assistant. The class will run from 2-4 p.m. at the art center.

The cost to attend is $35 per adult and $25 per child with an adult, with all supplies included.

Johnston is raising money to go to Europe and all proceeds will go toward that cause.

Attendees are invited to bring non-alcoholic beverages.

The Sagebrush Community Art Center will host another “Uncorked” workshop on Tuesday. “Sunshine Poppies” will offer music, fun and step-by-step guidance from local artist Sonja Caywood on painting your own 20X16 acrylic sunshine poppy painting. The event is open to all and all supplies are included in the price of admission. Space is limited and pre-registration is requested. Registration costs $5 per adult and $25 for children and can be made by calling the art center at 674-1970. The art center is located inside the Historic Train Depot at 201 E. Fifth St.

Pub Painting

The Wyoming Water Color Association will present “Pub Painting” an Artists in Motion fundraiser. On Friday at 5 p.m. the artists of the association will paint and sell their works inside the corner pub at Fifth Street and Main Street. There is no cost to attend but attendees must be age 21 or older to enter the pub. The WWCA offers classes to educate people on the art and Artists in Motion is a grassroots movement to bring art to the masses. Attendees’ participation is welcome. Landon’s Greenhouse and Nursery workshops @ Landon’s Greenhouse and Nursery

SHERIDAN — Landon’s Greenhouse and Nursery will host two free public workshops on Saturday.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Wayne Gray will present “Stop and smell the roses” an informative and fast-paced session that will cover the different types of roses, rose planting and care and rose pests and diseases and how to control them.

The second workshop will be presented by Landon’s manager Keith Kershaw at 1 p.m. Kershaw will present “Backyard orchard: All about fruit trees,” an informative workshop discussing how to grow fruit trees in Wyoming.

All workshops are free but space is limited so pre-registration is requested.

On Wednesday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in room 153 of the Whitney Building he will provide a presentation of his work and his creative process. This event is free and open to the public. On Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. he will spend the day working on unfinished drawings in the art wing hallway. Interested students and members of the public are encouraged to observe the evolution of his work throughout the day. On Friday from 12:30-4:30 p.m. he will conduct an experimental drawing workshop. More examples of his work will be exhibited in the fine arts wing gallery starting tomorrow and remaining through March 15. EPA/HUD Renovation, Repair and Painting Initial Training @ Holiday Inn

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services with the Low-Income Weatherization Program and the Montana State University Extension Housing Program, is sponsoring an event to be held in Sheridan on Thursday.

“EPA/HUD Renovation, Repair and Painting Initial Training” will be held at the Holiday Inn from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The eight hour course developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development will train attendees how to work safely in housing with lead-based paint and comply with EPA’s RRP rule, and HUD’s Lead Safe Home rule.

Attendees will be given a Certified Renovators photo ID which is valid for five years.

The course hold a value of $200 but is being offered in Sheridan for free thanks to the presenting sponsors.

Pre-registration is required and space is limited.
