Parents night out @ Sagebrush Community Art Center

SHERIDAN — The Sagebrush Community Art Center is organizing a night out for Sheridan area parents.

The nonprofit art center has partnered with the Open Range at the Sheridan Inn. Parents can drop kids — ages 3 and older — at the art center for a fun, art-filled evening while they enjoy a meal at the Open Range.

The art class is $20 per child. If your child participates in the class, the parents’ meal will include a free glass of champagne or a free dessert.

SheridanAires winter concert @ Sheridan Senior Center

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Senior Center’s SheridanAires will perform the group’s annual winter concert Thursday and Friday.

This year’s performances will be a tribute to Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.”

On Thursday, the performance will begin at 1:30 p.m. and refreshments will be served. A contribution of $2 per person is suggested.

On Friday, a dinner featuring pork tenderloin will begin at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the show at 7 p.m. The dinner cost is a suggested $10 per person. RSVPs are requested for dinner by Wednesday. There is no charge for only the show Friday.

High Mountain Holiday Bazaar @ Ranchester Town Hall

RANCHESTER — The High Mountain Holiday Bazaar will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Ranchester.

The craft bazaar and free chili lunch will occur in the Ranchester Town Hall multi-purpose room.

Breakfast items will also be served as a fundraiser for the Dayton Community Church youth group.

PBS Christmas concert featuring Amy, Annie Smith @ Sheridan Inn

SHERIDAN — On Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the Historic Sheridan Inn will host an old-fashioned Christmas concert.

The concert will feature the soulful music of Wyoming natives Annie and Amy Smith.

Following the concert, hot chocolate and cookies will be served.

WyomingPBS will tape the concert and broadcast it as part of the “Wyoming Chronicle” series on Dec. 18 at 8 p.m., Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 24 at 8:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public, but organizers ask those planning to attend to pick up tickets at the Inn’s front desk before the event. Seating will be limited.

SC Christmas concert @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College music, theater and dance departments will present “A Sheridan College Christmas 2015” on Friday at 7 p.m. at the WYO Theater.

The performance will feature music from some of the newly formed musical groups at Sheridan College — Brass Ensemble, Chamber Strings and the Viol Consort. Other performers include the SC Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Collegiate Chorale, Chamber Choir and Dance Program.

Renditions of iconic holiday songs, such as “Sleigh Ride,” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” as well as classic Christmas favorites will highlight the evening.

The performance’s finale will include a sing-along for the entire audience featuring the songs “Deck the Halls,” “Jingle Bells,” “O Christmas Tree,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and active military members, and $5 for students. Children 12 and under are free, but will need a ticket.

Kids jewelry-making party @ Thorne-Rider Campus Center at SC

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College Center for Workforce and Community Education will host its annual Holiday Jewelry Making Party for kids Dec. 12.

The event, set to take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Thorne-Rider Campus Center, will allow kids to make a bracelet that they can keep for themselves or give as a gift.

In addition, the party will include prizes, snacks, activities, games and fun for kids. All children ages 5 and older are welcome to participate.

The cost is $20 per child.

Live from The Met: Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The WYO Theater will host Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” as part of its The Metropolitan Opera: Live in High Definition series at 10:55 a.m. Saturday.

As part of its efforts to reinvigorate opera and reach out to a broader public, The Metropolitan Opera in New York launched the series of opera performances transmitted live to movie theaters and other venues around the world.

“The Magic Flute” is the drama of a noble prince who is ordered by the mysterious Queen of the Night to rescue a beautiful princess who has been kidnapped.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $9 for students. They are available at the WYO Theater box office.

VAMC veterans art exhibit @ Sheridan VAMC auditorium

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Veterans Affairs Medical Center’s annual Creative Arts Competition Exhibit will be on display Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m. in the VAMC’s auditorium.

Throughout the country each year, veteran patients compete in the creative arts competition at the local VA medical centers. Any veteran registered with the hospital is eligible to submit work — art, creative writing, drama, dance, music or other forms.

The Wednesday event is open to the public to enjoy the artistic talents of local veterans.

Ucross hosting new art exhibit @ Ucross Foundation Art Gallery

UCROSS — A new exhibition, (We)st Maria Rose & E.K. Wimmer, opened at the Ucross Foundation Art Gallery on Monday.

The multidisciplinary exhibit features 20 paintings by Maria Rose, along with photographs, collages and video by Wimmer, representing 20 years of relationship between the two artists.

As they state, “(We)st follows the trajectory of two lives intertwined, exploring different perspectives on shared experiences. Measuring the course of our relationship over two decades and four Western states: New Mexico, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming…the art reflects the highs and lows of a shared life: marriage, education, children, loss, growth and change.”

A reception for the artists will take place May 7 from 4-6 p.m. The event, which is open to the public at no charge, will include a gallery talk by Maria Rose and Wimmer at 4:15 p.m. The talk will be followed by music performed by a string trio affiliated with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra.

The exhibition will be on display through June 10 and is supported in part by a grant from the Wyoming Arts Council, through funding from the Wyoming State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. Award-winning Wyoming writer Nina McConigley, author of Cowboys and East Indians, has written the exhibition essay.

The Ucross Foundation Art Gallery is located ½ mile east of the intersection of Highways 14 and 16 East in Ucross.

SC to host exiting student art show in Martinsen Gallery @ Martinsen Gallery, Sheridan College

SHERIDAN — Sheridan College’s Martinsen Gallery will host an exhibit of exiting students’ art through Friday.

The show will feature the work of Micah Cornell, Tori Golab, Christina Harrelson, Brenna Powell and Jandey Shackelford.

The show opens Tuesday at the gallery and is available for public viewing daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit is free.

An opening reception will take place Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. and will include hors d’oeuvres.

SHS artwork to be displayed at library @ Fulmer Public Library Mezzanine
May 18 @ 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm

SHERIDAN — The 48th annual Wyoming Art Symposium concluded at the Casper Events Center April 23, showcasing 4,518 pieces of artwork from around the state. The students of Sheridan High School submitted 79 pieces of artwork to represent their school.

Sixty-seven other schools in Wyoming also participated this year. The SHS student artwork included ceramics, collages, drawings, graphics, paintings and photographs that were created this year. All the students’ hard work and dedication paid off this year with 49 Blue Ribbons (best of show) and three First Lady of Wyoming Art Awards. The three pieces of artwork were chosen by the First Lady of Wyoming herself, Carol Mead, and will go on to Cheyenne to be displayed in the governor’s mansion for an entire year.

The Sheridan High School students’ artwork will be on display on the Fulmer Public Library Mezzanine through May 24. A public artists reception will take place May 18 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Buffalo shop to feature Brooklyn potter’s work @ Margo’s Pottery and Fine Crafts

SHERIDAN — Margo’s Pottery and Fine Crafts will feature the work of Brooklyn potter Claire Weissberg this summer. The show will run from May 27 through Aug. 6, with a reception for the artist set for Friday from 5-7 p.m.

Weissberg’s porcelain pottery is all wheel-thrown and fired in an electric kiln at mid-range. The magazine Ceramics Monthly features a pitcher from the show in its May issue.

Weissberg has no employees. She throws, trims, glazes, fires, sells and packs and ships her own work from her studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Weissberg was born in New York City, studied pottery with Clary Illian in Iowa and Chiyoichi Shimizu in Japan. She received her Master of Fine Arts in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design and has been a full-time potter in Brooklyn since 1989.

SAGE Juried Art Show opens June 1 @ Sagebrush Community Art Center

SHERIDAN — Opening day for the sixth annual SAGE National Juried Art Show will be June 1 at the Sagebrush Community Art Center.

The show is an exhibit from artists all over the country, in any medium, on display through June 30. This year’s juror is Boston artist Vincent Crotty, who will also be giving an oil painting workshop June 17-19.

The awards ceremony and reception is June 16 from 5-7 p.m. Cash awards will be presented for best of show; first, second and third places; and honorable mention. Both the exhibit and the awards ceremony are free and open to the public.

Brinton to open new exhibit, ‘Landscape & Beyond’ @ Brinton Museum

BIG HORN — The Brinton Museum will feature nationally-acclaimed American landscape painter Clyde Aspevig in a one-person exhibit, “Landscape & Beyond,” on display in the Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Building’s Jacomien Mars Reception Gallery from June 5 through July 31.

A reception to meet the artist is set for June 5, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for museum members.

Known by museums and world class collectors, Aspevig is highly regarded as an accomplished American painter who uses vibrant color to depict spectacular Western landscapes. Aspevig is the recipient of numerous awards going back to the 1980s, including more recently the 1997 Prix de West Invitational Award, National Cowboy Hall of Fame; the prestigious 2006 Autry National Center John J. Geraghty Award; and the 2013 Edgar Payne Award for Best Landscape at the 102nd California Art Gold Medal Show, USC Fisher Museum of Art in Los Angeles, California.

As an artist who grew up on a ranch in Montana, his paintings evoke a sense of passion about the land that tugs at an emotional sensibility in all of us. The exhibit includes 28 paintings representing new work as well as a selection of oils dating back to 2013.

Submissions for juried photography show due June 15 @ Sagebrush Community Art Center

SHERIDAN — The Sagebrush Community Art Center has issued a call for submissions for the second annual juried photography show.

The show is open to all artists residing in the U.S., but works cannot exceed 3-foot-by-3-foot.

The works to be exhibited will be chosen by Adam Jahiel, a world-renowned photographer who lives in Sheridan County.

All entries must be submitted by June 15  to be considered. Details on how to submit photos can be found at artinsheridan.com.

The show will open at the art center July 6 and run through Aug. 23.

Library kicks off June exhibit on mezzanine @ Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library

SHERIDAN — Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library will host the artwork of local student artists Rebekah Blommel, Nichole Wrigley and Maria Stacy on the mezzanine during the month of June.

A free public reception for the artists will be held on the mezzanine on Monday from 5-7 p.m.

Blommel grew up in Sheridan and is currently an art major at Sheridan College. She is trying out different mediums to better understand the materials used and to develop a style that speaks to her. She loves nature and enjoys snapping moments in time using of photography.

Nichole Wrigley grew up in Wright and is currently attending Sheridan College as an art major. She plans to move on and become an art educator. She tries to experiment with new techniques and processes in her work while exploring new mediums. She combines illustration and realism in her work.

Maria Stacy said her ultimate goal is to make something that will have a positive effect in someone’s life and art is going to be a part of that goal. She said she makes art not because she loves it, but because of the impact it has had on her life. She currently attends Sheridan College discovering what she wants to do with her love for art in the job field.

‘Collage with Neltje’ workshop set for June 25 @ The Sagebrush Community Art Center

SHERIDAN — The Sagebrush Community Art Center will host “Collage with Neltje” on June 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost to attend is $60 for a member and $70 for a non-member.

Supports and glue will be provided, including pictures from newspapers or

magazines and trinkets or earrings. Supplies will cover an area approximately 20 inches by 15 inches.

Participants are encouraged to bring a sack lunch or the class will go out to eat during the one-hour lunch break.
