Senior Theater Players to resume @ Sheridan Senior Center

SHERIDAN — The Senior Theater Players will resume Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Sheridan Senior Center.

The acting group, under the direction of Pat Tomsovic, has put out a call for participants for an upcoming show.

No memorization is required for the production of “Chance Hastings, Range Detective,” and the group welcomes newcomers.

Those interested in participating should either sign up by calling the center at 672-2240 or attending the first couple of meetings of the group. Performance dates will be discussed among cast members.

Performances will be held at the Sheridan Senior Center, located at 211 Smith St.

UW’s outreach for presidential search

Members of the University of Wyoming community and people around Wyoming have an opportunity to voice their desired qualifications and characteristics for a new UW president.

Presidential search listening sessions are scheduled on the Laramie campus and at UW-Casper with video-conferencing connections to many Wyoming communities, including Sheridan. Input gathered from the meetings will help guide the selection committee as they consider candidates.

A statewide outreach meeting, originating in Casper, will be broadcast through UW’s Outreach Video Network Monday from 5-6:30 p.m. Members of the community interested in participating can connect to the network at Sheridan College in the Watt Building, room 132.

Mental health summit @ Elks Lodge

The Sheridan VA Medical Center has organized a mental health summit to bring together key stakeholders in the community with two goals: enhancing access to mental health services and addressing the mental health care needs of veterans and their family members residing in the Sheridan area. Led by mental health professionals.

SCHEDULE:
8:30-9:00 a.m. – registration
9-9:30 a.m. – welcome and description of the VA’s current services
9:30-10:30 a.m. – three breakout discussion sessions: 10 elements of recovery, mental health inpatient needs, homeless challenge
10:45-11:45 a.m. – three breakout discussions: caregiver/family support, Indian health services, homeless challenge
11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. – lunch on your own, poster sessions
1:15-1:30 p.m. – plenary session and housekeeping items
1:30-3 p.m. – summary of sessions, discussion
3-3:30 p.m. – closing remarks and future direction

American Legion Auxiliary to host public luncheon @ Country Kitchen

The American Legion Auxiliary will host a public luncheon to introduce its new department president.

Rebecca Allred will serve as the Department of Wyoming American Legion Auxiliary president for the 2015-16 year.

Allred joined the auxiliary sponsored by her husband, Sherman Allred, a veteran of the Vietnam era. She has served as Marion Tanner Unit 29 president, two-time District 4 president and held the department offices of chaplain and vice president/membership chairman. In 2001, she received the American Legion Educator of the Year award for Wyoming.

The meet and greet luncheon will be held at the Country Kitchen at noon on Tuesday.

It is free to attend and lunch can be purchased off the menu. All members of the public are welcome.

Community meeting in Big Horn @ Big Horn High School

Sheridan County is hosting a community meeting to discuss issues that may be of interest to residents living in and around the community of Big Horn.

These issues include street and road maintenance, storm drainage and flood plains and service and improvement districts. Sheridan County commissioners, County Attorney Matt Redle and county public works staff will be on hand to answer questions and discuss issues of interest to the residents of the area.

The meeting will be held in the Big Horn High School auditorium Tuesday from 5:30- 7:30 p.m.

Kickoff for study circles on dementia @ Sheridan College

The Center for a Vital Community is organizing study circles on dementia beginning with a kickoff Tuesday from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Everyone is invited to be part of the community conversation to create a dementia friendly community that will include education, resources and support for those living with dementia and their care partners.

A community that is informed, safe, respectful and supportive is a place where those living with dementia can continue to live meaningful lives, study circle organizers said.

The kickoff will be held at the Whitney Academic Center at Sheridan College on Tuesday.

The study circles will meet weekly for two hours from Sept. 28 through Oct. 31.

An action forum will then close out the effort on Nov. 4 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Sheridan County YMCA.

Biketoberfest @ Sheridan County Fairgrounds

The Sheridan Community Land Trust is gearing up for its annual Biketoberfest event, set for Oct. 10 at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will feature a four-mile fun run/walk, seven-mile trail run or 15-mile mountain bike race.

This year’s event will be a morning and afternoon event, with fun kids activities, Dominos pizza and beer from the Black Tooth Brewing Company to follow the races.

Fees are $30 for the four-mile race and $35 for either of the other two races until Oct. 3.

Rosary crusade @ Main Street, Sheridan

 A public square rosary crusade will take place at noon Saturday at the corner of Main and Burkitt streets.

Organizers encourage local residents to attend and pray the rosary. The purpose of the event is to ask for God’s blessings on the nation to help solve the country’s moral and financial problems.

An estimated 12,000 similar rallies will take place across the country on Saturday.

Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce luncheon @ Sheridan Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Sheridan Holiday Inn.

At the event, representatives from Cloud Peak Energy will discuss hurdles facing the energy industry. In addition, the graduates of the 2015 class of Leadership Sheridan County will be recognized.

The luncheon is open to the public. The cost is $15 per person for the lunch buffet.

Powder River Basin Resource Council meeting, dinner @ Sheridan Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Powder River Basin Resource Council will conduct its annual meeting and dinner Oct. 31 at the Holiday Inn in Sheridan.

At 3:45 p.m., Sheridan attorney Tom Toner will discuss land and mineral owners’ rights in the oil and gas bust.

A social hour, music, live and silent auctions and a 50/50 raffle will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Dinner will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature keynote speaker Andrew Nikiforuk. The award-winning Canadian journalist will present “Citizens’ Rights, Government Accountability and Big Oil.”

The cost to attend is $35 for PRBRC members and $45 for nonmembers.

The event Wednesday will focus on the action steps developed by the study circles.
