Buffalo shop to feature Brooklyn potter’s work @ Margo’s Pottery and Fine Crafts

SHERIDAN — Margo’s Pottery and Fine Crafts will feature the work of Brooklyn potter Claire Weissberg this summer. The show will run from May 27 through Aug. 6, with a reception for the artist set for Friday from 5-7 p.m.

Weissberg’s porcelain pottery is all wheel-thrown and fired in an electric kiln at mid-range. The magazine Ceramics Monthly features a pitcher from the show in its May issue.

Weissberg has no employees. She throws, trims, glazes, fires, sells and packs and ships her own work from her studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Weissberg was born in New York City, studied pottery with Clary Illian in Iowa and Chiyoichi Shimizu in Japan. She received her Master of Fine Arts in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design and has been a full-time potter in Brooklyn since 1989.

VFW to celebrate Poppy Drive @ Wal-Mart and Kmart
May 28 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

SHERIDAN — The VFW Roy Eaton #1560 members will hold a Buddy Poppy drive Tuesday and Saturday.

On Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to noon, Buddy Poppies will be available at the Sheridan Veterans Affairs Medical Center. On Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, they will be available at Kmart and Wal-Mart.

The red Buddy Poppy symbolizes the lives lost in war.

Donations will be accepted for the poppies. All proceeds raised will benefit veterans and their families.

Buddy Poppies are assembled in VA hospitals by veterans.

Wal-Mart is located at 1695 Coffeen Ave. Kmart is located at 2571 N. Main St.

Cutting horse, reined cowhorse show set for May 28 @ Sheridan College AgriPark

SHERIDAN — The cutting horse and reined cowhorse portions of the Buffalo High School rodeo will take place May 28 at the Sheridan College AgriPark.

While the other portions of the event will take place earlier in the day at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, these contests will begin at 4 p.m. and will bring in high school competitors from across the state.

Admission to the event is free.

SAGE Juried Art Show opens June 1 @ Sagebrush Community Art Center

SHERIDAN — Opening day for the sixth annual SAGE National Juried Art Show will be June 1 at the Sagebrush Community Art Center.

The show is an exhibit from artists all over the country, in any medium, on display through June 30. This year’s juror is Boston artist Vincent Crotty, who will also be giving an oil painting workshop June 17-19.

The awards ceremony and reception is June 16 from 5-7 p.m. Cash awards will be presented for best of show; first, second and third places; and honorable mention. Both the exhibit and the awards ceremony are free and open to the public.

The Brinton to host Rolls-Royce debut @ Brinton Museum

SHERIDAN — Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will light up the Wyoming countryside June 2 with the Mountain West debut of the Dawn supercar. The launch will take place at The Brinton Museum, and offer guests an opportunity to experience the twin-turbo, 6.6-liter, V12 juggernaut in a setting that is quintessentially Rolls-Royce.

The Mountain West debut of the Dawn coincides with a Society of American Travel Writers chapter conference being hosted in Sheridan June 2-5.

While in Sheridan, conference attendees will have an opportunity to explore Sheridan, the Bighorn Mountains, centuries-old guest ranches, our historic downtown, Indian battle sites, and beyond, and also test drive the new Dawn while visiting The Brinton Museum.

Sheridan Travel & Tourism is putting together programs with local businesses that showcase all that Sheridan has to offer, from starry night state park drives, downtown dine arounds, craft culture experiences, powwows and more.

YMCA to offer free entrance on Fridays @ Sheridan County YMCA

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County YMCA will offer free entrance to the facility on Fridays in June, July and August.

Those interested in utilizing the offer can take a group exercise class, strengthen and tone in the weight room, shoot hoops in the gyms, swim in the pool and have fun in Playland.

You can also enter your name in a drawing for a free six-month membership.

Chamber seeking RFPs for Ignite conference @ The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce is preparing for its second annual Ignite Your Business Conference, a one-day intensive training for businesses and employees to be held Oct. 18 at Sheridan College.

The Business Retention and Expansion committee is currently accepting proposals to be a trainer at the conference. All proposals are due at the Chamber by June 3. Topics can include human resources and customer service, marketing and communications, business growth and development and technology.

SHERIDAN — Friday is the last day to register for the Wyoming Rehab Hoop Jam 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

Hoop Jam was created in 2000 as a fundraising opportunity to provide an athletic training position to Sheridan County Schools. The tournament continues to support Sheridan High School activities and the new athletic training facility at the school.

The 2016 Hoop Jam tournament is scheduled for June 4 and 5. This year’s tournament has been moved to the SHS parking lot.

Brinton to open new exhibit, ‘Landscape & Beyond’ @ Brinton Museum

BIG HORN — The Brinton Museum will feature nationally-acclaimed American landscape painter Clyde Aspevig in a one-person exhibit, “Landscape & Beyond,” on display in the Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Building’s Jacomien Mars Reception Gallery from June 5 through July 31.

A reception to meet the artist is set for June 5, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for museum members.

Known by museums and world class collectors, Aspevig is highly regarded as an accomplished American painter who uses vibrant color to depict spectacular Western landscapes. Aspevig is the recipient of numerous awards going back to the 1980s, including more recently the 1997 Prix de West Invitational Award, National Cowboy Hall of Fame; the prestigious 2006 Autry National Center John J. Geraghty Award; and the 2013 Edgar Payne Award for Best Landscape at the 102nd California Art Gold Medal Show, USC Fisher Museum of Art in Los Angeles, California.

As an artist who grew up on a ranch in Montana, his paintings evoke a sense of passion about the land that tugs at an emotional sensibility in all of us. The exhibit includes 28 paintings representing new work as well as a selection of oils dating back to 2013.

Mompreneurship conference, connection set for June 10 @ Sheridan College in Johnson County

SHERIDAN — In an effort to help with the family finances, many stay-at-home moms and other individuals have created home-based businesses, small businesses and direct sales businesses. Recognizing the growth of these small businesses and with a desire to help these businesses be successful, Northern Wyoming Community College District Center for Workforce and Community Education will offer a Mompreneurship Conference and Connection.

The conference is scheduled for June 10 at the Sheridan College in Johnson County campus in Buffalo.

The day is set to help business owners re-energize themselves with their business. This one-day event is for individuals who want to discover the tools for success, make strategic business connections and leave feeling empowered and inspired to take action.

Topics will include productivity/time management, social media, accounting, business insurance, licenses and taxes. At the end of the day, a Connection Celebration will give participants an opportunity to network, learn from each other and win prizes.

The day will start at 9 a.m. on June 10 and run through approximately 4:30 p.m. The cost is $100 and includes snacks. Lunch is on your own.

If you register by May 15, you will receive a discount of $20.
