SHERIDAN — While one team faded, the other just kept scoring runs.
Unfortunately for the Sheridan Troopers, they were the former in a 16-8 second-round loss to Cheyenne Post 6 last night at the Wyoming American Legion ‘AA’ State Tournament in Cheyenne. Sheridan plays at 12:30 today against the Cheyenne Hawks as both squads look to keep their seasons alive. The winner of that game gets a Jackson or Gillette at 4 p.m. today, who play at 9:3o this morning.
Sheridan started Kyle Atkinson, who lasted 3 and 1/3 innings as walks caught up with him and he allowed six earned runs, giving 10 free bases in all while striking out two on just three hits. Post 6 had similar problems as Isaac Block was pulled after three innings after giving up eight earned runs of his own. The contest was back and forth up to that point with Sheridan coming back from an early 3-0 deficit.
Sheridan took an 8-7 lead after four, answering four runs from Post 6 in the top of the inning, but the advantage would be their last. Sheridan wouldn’t score again, and Post 6 scored eight over the next three frames, adding one in the top of the ninth to seal the win. Post 6 plays Casper at 7 p..m. in a state semifinal.
Sheridan got a three-RBI triple from Drew Adriaens, and Ethan Hoopes and Mark Munson had two RBIs apiece. They were 12 for 40 at the plate with 10 strikeouts. Post 6 recorded 12 hits and eight earned runs against pitchers Will O’Dell and Tyler Stauffer during the Sheridan pair’s combined 5 and 2/3 innings of relief.
The rare, full nine-inning contest tested both teams, and Post 6 took advantage of 17 walks.
More high-scoring baseball could be in store today as the last time the Troopers met the Cheyenne Hawks this season Sheridan came out on top of a 17-13 shootout during a tournament in Cheyenne in mid-July.
Sheridan can still reach the championship game, but they’d need the two wins today and another tomorrow morning. The winner of the Saturday morning game gets the Post 6-Casper winner from tonight in a 4 p.m. title game.
