Jets state tournament begins with 11-0 loss to Casper

SHERIDAN — The Jets struggled early on the mound, and Casper took advantage as the two teams opened their State ‘B’ Tournament Thursday night in Sheridan.

Casper beat Sheridan 11-0 in the first game of pool play. Sheridan will play Laramie today at 7 p.m. to determine seeding for Saturday’s single-elimination round.

“We were just out played today,” head coach Ryan Murner said. “We missed on our locations, made quite a few mental mistakes, and couldn’t find ways to extend innings.

“Casper put up runs on us early and unfortunately we couldn’t find a way to get any momentum.”
He said he hoped for better from his team today. Laramie has yet to open their tournament, and Cheyenne beat Gillette 10-1 in the only other game yesterday.

Blake Godwin started for the Jets, but was chased after a 5-0 Casper lead swelled in the second inning. Davis Alden went three innings in relief, allowing two earned runs, and Caleb Hoopes got the final three outs before the 10-run rule took effect.

Sheridan’s offense was limited. James Timberlake was two for two at the plate.

Winners out of the two three-team pools will receive a bye, meaning they’ll play Saturday afternoon against winners of Saturday morning first-round games.

As for tonight, this will be the first time the Jets have played Laramie in 2013.
