SC rodeo moves up in standings

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College men’s rodeo team’s first win in five years has moved them up the Central Rocky Mountain Region standings.

Sheridan (1,650 points) sits in sixth place in the 13-team field, narrowly trailing Northeastern Junior College (Sterling, Colo.) (1,730) and Casper College (1,880).

Individually, the SC team is led by Taygen Schuelke, who has moved up to No. 5 in the All-Around standings. He has 580 points, behind Troy Wilcox of Eastern Wyoming College in first with 915 points. Schuelke is also the No. 2 bull rider in the region with 290 points, right behind Neil Williams of Casper College and his 295.

Zeke Thurston is first in saddle bronc rankings. He has 420 points, well ahead of the second place rider, Travis Nelson of Gillette, who has 335. Schuelke is fourth with 240. Tate Schwagler is the fifth-ranked bareback rider as of this week. His 405 points are behind Gillette College’s Casey Breuer in first with 605 points.

While the weekend’s win in Gillette was the first in at least five years, as of press time Monday, it was unclear how long it had actually been since an SC men’s team win.

The SC rodeo team experienced success during the mid 2000s under the direction of coach Rick Landeis when they won the Eastern Wyoming College rodeo in Torrington in 2004 and the University of Wyoming rodeo in 2005. Both the men’s and women’s teams won the UW rodeo that year.

Even beyond 2005, Landeis-directed teams were well-represented at the College National Finals Rodeo.

This weekend’s win marks the first team victory for head coach Marc Gilkerson, who is in his fourth year as SC rodeo coach.

The rodeo team is idle this week, and will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for the Colorado State University rodeo March 29-31.
