SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Troopers used a 33-run two-game output yesterday to shake off a bad loss as they started 2-0 at a Fourth of July weekend tournament in Cheyenne.
After losing their first conference game this season, 9-5, to Gillette Tuesday night, the Troop (13-16) beat Colorado Instructional 14-4 last night after rolling over Wheatland 19-9 earlier in the day.
Sheridan totaled 17 hits in the win over Wheatland, paced by Connor McCafferty’s six-RBI day.
Going 4 for 4 at the plate, he hit a home run in the first inning and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle after a double and two singles. Five other Troopers had more than one RBI.
Sheridan fell behind 9-3 early, but battled back with two in the third, nine in the fourth and five runs in the sixth as they held Wheatland scoreless after the second inning. Skyler Holwell pitched five full innings, walking three and striking out two.
Continuing their Fourth of July fireworks on offense, Sheridan jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on Colorado last night, and with the score 8-4 entering the sixth, they tacked on six more runs to force the mercy rule and get the win. Drew Adriaens had three RBIs, continuing his recent hot streak as he hit another home run, his fourth since Saturday.
Matt Mullinax, Ethan Hoopes and Tony Mort each had two RBIs.
Sheridan plays the Cheyenne Hawks tonight at 5 o’clock.
