Colo. fire burns in erratic winds, threatens homes
Date posted: March 16, 2013
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — An 800-acre wildfire is threatening more than 50 homes in northern Colorado amid gusty winds and warm weather and has prompted hundreds of evacuation orders.
The fire began Friday west of Fort Collins and is burning near the scene of a large wildfire last summer that burned 259 homes and killed one person.
Officials say firefighters saved two homes and a state park visitors center from flames. They say no homes have been destroyed.
Officials say 860 phone lines got automated calls ordering evacuations, but some addresses have multiple lines and other numbers were cellphones, so the exact number of homes isn’t known.
Some evacuations ordered earlier Friday have been lifted.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Firefighters have controlled a second, smaller fire nearby.
