WEATHER FROM OUR SPONSORS
The difference between death and taxes? Death doesn’t get more complicated every year.
A week from today, summer “officially” kicks off with the annual Downtown Sheridan Association’s Third Thursday Street Festival. It’s now in its fourth summer, located on Main Street and Grinnell Plaza. There will be exhibits, booths, good food, live music and a chance to catch up with friends and neighbors and pet the occasional (or frequent, depending on one’s point of view) dog.
Good stuff, this.
Sponsors include: Hammer Chevrolet, Bank of the West, Streetwear Clothing & Baby, Too, Warehouse 201, city of Sheridan, Brittain World Travel, Sheridan Travel & Tourism. For more info: 672-8881.

New York’s One World Trade Center had its mast put into place recently. It is now the third tallest building in the world at 1,776 feet, paying homage to the year of U.S. independence. It will be the tallest in the Western Hemisphere. (The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest building in the world at 2,717 feet.) Construction is to be finished by early 2014, according to The Wall Street Journal. Other distinctive notes regarding its construction:
• There are one million square feet of windows that have been tested against hurricanes and earthquakes. The building contains 48,000 tons of steel. The Empire State Building, when it was finished in 1931, has 60,000 tons.
• The top floors will feature two floors of observation decks, several restaurants and special events space. In all, 3.5 million square feet. The building is tapered as it ascends; there is 46,405 square feet on floor 20 and 34,925 on floor 80.
Sheridan Press tidings…….
• The forthcoming Sheridan-Wyo-Rodeo magazine, a special edition of our Destination Sheridan brand, will feature 80 pages, up from 64 pages a year ago. One of our graphic artists, Nicole Scofield is putting together the attractive cover. It will include news and features of the community’s premier event, photos, useful marketing information and much more.
It’s a “keeper” and something to send to friends and relatives. It will be published July 3 in the Press and will be free on more than 120 newstands throughout the area.
The Press is a corporate sponsor of Sheridan-Wyo-Rodeo.
In Jerusalem, a CNN journalist heard about a very old man who had been going to the Western (wailing) Wall to pray, twice a day, every day, for a long, long time.
The journalist went and checked it out. There he was, the old man, in prayer at the Western Wall.
The journalist watched him pray. After almost an hour, he turned and began to walk away.
The journalist approached him for an interview. “Sir, I’m Rebecca Smith from CNN. Sir, how long have you been coming to the Western Wall and praying?”
“For about 60 years,” he replied.
“Sixty years! That’s amazing,” the journalist said. “What do you pray for?”
“I pray for peace between the Christians, the Jews, and the Muslims.
“I pray for all the hatred to stop and I pray for all of our children to grow up safely and in friendship with others.”
“That’s impressive, sir,” she replied. She asked a follow up question, “how do you feel after doing this for 60 years?”
“Like I’m talking to a wall.”
