UW Extension field day to offer variety of classes for area residents

SHERIDAN — The University of Wyoming Sheridan Research and Extension Center is having a free field day Saturday at the center and at Sheridan College.

The event will feature tours of the field trials at the center, tours of the field trials and vineyards at Sheridan College and a series of educational sessions for ranchers and producers, as well as home gardeners. The event is free and open to the public.

“This is an important responsibility of the university as a whole, to keep the public informed about various projects and also communicate the information from research trials to producers,” said Valtcho Jeliazkov, associate professor and director of the center. “It is basically a kind of extension activity where we are trying to provide more information and educate not only producers, but also the general public.”

The day will begin at the center east of Sheridan with registration at 8:30 a.m. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., attendees will tour the center and receive updates on a variety of field trials taking place. The group will then travel to the Sheridan College campus for further viewing of field trials and vineyards.

“First of all, we have forage trials because of the importance of forages (locally),” Jeliazkov explained. “We have small grain or cereal trials like barley and wheat. We also have reclamation projects with coal bed methane water. We also have a certified organic garden with specialty crops. We have projects with oilseed crops for biofuel production. We also have an orchard with fruit trees and a vineyard with grapes.”

After a lunch break from noon to 1 p.m., afternoon educational sessions will begin at Sheridan College. Anyone not wanting to participate in the morning field trial tour, is welcome to attend just the afternoon sessions.
The sessions are broken into two divisions, one geared toward homeowners and gardeners and one for ranchers, producers and farmers, though attendees are welcome to attend any of the sessions.

The session topics were chosen based on feedback from the public and from previous field day attendees. Experts in each field have been chosen to present the session and answer questions from attendees.

The reservation window for the buffet lunch has closed, but participants are welcome to bring a sack lunch.
The center is located at 663 Wyarno Road. From Sheridan, travel seven miles east from the Information Center on Fifth Street. The center is located on the left and is marked with a sign.
