Shoppers come in droves to county yard sale

SHERIDAN — The planners behind the Sheridan County yard sale said response to this year’s event was overwhelmingly positive, with large crowds flocking to the Burkitt Street location well before the sale’s 7 a.m. start time Friday.

“They just came in droves,” said volunteer Mike Morris. “It’s your typical garage sale mentality.”

Hosted in years when county officials are looking to purge old supplies from their offices in the Sheridan County Courthouse, proceeds from the event are contributed to the county’s general expenses fund.

While final figures detailing exactly how much was earned were not yet available by press time, volunteers at the sale said visitors were eager to clear out their inventory of office supplies, furniture and other similar wares.

Volunteer Sue Allender, also a deputy clerk for the Sheridan County Commissioners, said early arrivals snatched up dozens of chairs within moments of the sale’s opening.

Allender and Morris said clear skies, warm temperatures and the sale’s location along a busy thoroughfare all contributed to the event’s success.
