RANCHESTER — Ranchester Town Council approved on second reading an ordinance that will annex approximately 16 acres into town limits at its meeting Tuesday.
The property belongs to Barney Bros. Land and Livestock. It is situated on the southeast corner of town, adjacent to Stonebrook Meadows subdivision. There were no concerns expressed about the annexation at the public hearing in April.
Council members also approved on second reading Ordinance 254, which will increase water rates for excessive water use to deter people from overwatering, town Clerk Teri Laya said. Residential, commercial, multiple residence and senior citizen water rates were increased for usage of more than 60,100 gallons per month. The town’s water rate ordinance was amended to include categories for usage rates of 60,100 to 75,000 gallons and more than 75,000 gallons.
A bid award for the most recent Safe Routes to School project was approved. A & B Buildings and Supplies of Sheridan was awarded $105,863.37 to make improvements to the south side of Betty Street between Carl and Weare Streets, Weare Street from Betty Street to U.S. Highway 14 and Gillette Street from Hardin to Halbert streets.
Safe Routes to School will be funded with a government grant, Laya said. It encourages students to walk and bike to school by providing safe, easily accessible routes.
Council members approved the first reading of the fiscal year 2014 budget with no changes.
