Story Yard Sale Day set for Sunday

SHERIDAN — Story is a quiet little hamlet most days of the year, but not so on Story Yard Sale Day.
Yard salers — ranging from casual browsers to ardent bargainers — flock to the community located about 15 miles south of Sheridan for a day packed with treasure seeking and some serious mingling.
“It is a rather big event that takes on a life of its own. It’s great fun,” organizer John Matejov said. “If you can’t sell something during Story Yard Sale Day, it’s too high priced or you don’t really want to sell it.”
This year marks the 15th Annual Story Yard Sale Day, according to Matejov. Nearly 40 residents will participate, the most ever. Sales are set to begin at 8 a.m. Sunday and will last until people feel like packing up.
The Story Woman’s Club will offer a breakfast fundraiser at 7:30 a.m. with biscuits and gravy, cinnamon rolls and apple turnovers. High Mountain Java and the Story Store will offer grab-and-go food options to keep yard salers going strong throughout the day.
Story Yard Sale Day is always held on the first Sunday in June, rain or shine. Holding it on Sunday allows people to enjoy yard sales in Sheridan and Buffalo on Saturday and focus their efforts on Story without any distractions.
“Yard salers are a great bunch of people,” Matejov said. “Like me, they enjoy the art of the deal. The psychology of buying and selling for me is pure enjoyment.”
Last year, Matejov upped the stakes with an official Yard Sale Contest in which salers could vote for their favorite yard sale. First, second and third place winners received a gift certificate to a business of their choice in Story.
“It’s not a great goal to achieve, but it adds some flair to the event,” he said. He hopes the contest will gain steam this year and encourages all yard salers to mark their vote on their official Story Yard Sale Day map and drop it in the ballot boxes on the way out of town.
Yes, there are official Story Yard Sale Day maps. They are available at the entrances into town, the Story Woman’s Club and Story Store. For those who want a sneak peek, maps will be handed out at 7 p.m. in the Walmart parking lot near the supermarket entrance.
“It’s just a great community event,” Matejov said, encouraging everyone to come out for a day that is more fun than that proverbial barrel of monkeys.
