Casper smoking ban talks continue

CASPER (AP) — Casper residents likely won’t get a chance to weigh in on whether to repeal or change the city’s smoking ban until at least next month.

Mayor Kenyne Schlager said Wednesday that city councilors want to discuss proposed changes one more time after hearing back from the city attorney. She said that would mean a public hearing on a formal proposal probably wouldn’t happen until the first or second week of April as long as budget sessions don’t prevent that.

The Casper Star-Tribune reported that councilors informally backed exempting some places, including bars, health care facilities and private clubs, from the ban, during their meeting Tuesday.
Smoking ban supporters have vowed to seek a referendum if councilors vote to repeal the ban on smoking in bars, restaurants, offices and other public spaces.
