Small nabs NAMA award

SHERIDAN — Gary Small & the Coyote’ Bros were awarded the “Best World Music” music award at the 14th annual Native American Music Awards show, held at the Seneca Niagara Casino and Events Center May 10. The group secured the award for their most recent album, “Hostiles & Renegades.”

Small has won several NAMA awards previously including “Songwriter of the Year” in 2002, “Rock Album of the Year” in 2007, and “Best Male Artist” in 2011. Small was also one of six artists nominated for the prestigious “Artist of the Year” category at this year’s show.

“I’m very proud of the fact that we set out to produce an album that could have a profound humanitarian and musical statement that all people of all nations and ethnicity could relate to,” Small said in a press release. “I’ve always loved the music of Bob Marley, Santana and War. Their music has the catalyst that contains exactly what I’m talking about. I want us (The Coyote’ Bros.) to be in that camp as well.”
The current band has been recording together since 2005, and before that Gary Small led the Gary Small Band for 15 years in Portland, Ore. He has played with accomplished musicians including Graham Lear, former drummer of Santana, and former Joe Cocker percussionist Bobby Torres.

The NAMA was founded in 1998. According to the American Federation of Radio Television Artists, the event has “All the professionalism and production values of much larger events like the Grammy Awards and the American Music Awards.”
