Newsweek names SHS ‘Best Public High School’

SHERIDAN — For the second time, Sheridan High School has been named a “Best Public High School” by Newsweek magazine. SHS is the only Wyoming high school to make the 2013 list.

SHS first made the magazine’s list in 2008. The criteria for selection are graduation rate, college entrance and the number of students taking the Advanced Placement tests.

Methodology for consideration begins with four-year, on-time graduation rate, which is weighted at 25 percent and is based on the criterion set forth by the National Governor’s Association.
This is calculated by dividing the number of graduates in 2012 by the number of ninth-graders in 2008, plus transfers in and minus transfers out.

The second factor is the percent of 2011 graduates accepted to two- or four-year colleges.

The third factor is the number of AP tests per student, weighted at 25 percent. The number of students taking the exam compared to the student body enrollment is the final data point.

“I am so proud of the students and faculty in this high school,” SHS Principal Dirlene Wheeler said. “There are many fine high schools in Wyoming and the Rockies, but this award shows that we are the top performing high school in the state.

“Remember, a big part of why we’ve been successful is our feeder schools, the (kindergarten through eighth-grade) teachers in this district are phenomenal.”

Earlier this month, SHS was also recognized by U.S. News & World Report. The high school received a silver award this year, and had the second highest ranking in the state behind Jackson Hole High School. This is the second year the high school has received a silver award.

In addition, Big Horn High School and Tongue River High School were recognized as top schools, taking bronze medals. BHHS previously received bronze medals in 2012 and 2009.
