KWHS sets pace during day one of conference tourney at Powder Horn; SHS boys 7th, girls 5th

SHERIDAN — The Kelly Walsh High School boys and girls golf teams lead the 4A conference tournament field after one day at the Powder Horn.

Sheridan High School, the host school for this year’s tournament, is in seventh place after a first-day 349. The girls shot a 296 for fifth place.

“I thought Jack Mavrakis played well,” head coach Larry Martoglio said. Mavrakis leads the Broncs after he shot a 76 and is tied for sixth place. Cheyenne East’s Quintin Pope shot a 72 for the first round lead and Laramie’s Robbie Harding shot a 73.

Austin Hinchey and Corbin Hill of KWH each carded the 74s. After their 306, the KW boys were nine strokes ahead of Laramie in first. The girls’ 255 was just on top of Natrona’s 257.

“I thought that our No. 3 guy, Bailey Bonnett, a freshman, had a nice day,” Martoglio said. “It was nice to see him step up, but in order to move up on the leaderboard we need our four and five guys to shoot better.”

Bonnett shot an 86, with Ben Wollenzien’s 89 close behind. Forrest DeBolt shot a 106.

The Lady Broncs were led by Hillary Lindell who was in ninth place with a 93. Katie Beardslee shot a 101, and Madison Farr carded a 102.

“I was happy with all three of them,” Martoglio said of his girls squad. “I think Jack and Hillary are both in a position to make all-conference going into today. Madison and Katie would like to break 100, that’s their goal. I was really happy with the way the girls played.”

Beardslee, a freshman, and Farr, a junior, each carded personal bests Monday.

“It was a perfect day for golf,” Martoglio said. Monday reached 91 degrees and temps for Tuesday’s final round are expected around 77.

“I anticipated the scores to be a little bit better, but hopefully today we’ll see some scores that all the players will be proud of,” Martoglio added.

The tournament is expected to finish around 4 p.m. today.
