SHS track rolling into state

SHERIDAN — The SHS track team had its best meet of the season when it mattered most.

The Lady Broncs finished fourth and the Broncs missed second by a point Saturday at the 1A-2A-4A East Regional track meet in Gillette.

In all, 24 SHS athletes are headed to state track this weekend in Casper — 13 girls in 15 events and 11 boys in 14 events.

“The boys did a great job as a team, and although it was very tough to lose to Cheyenne East by a point for second place, they did a very good job in placing third at the meet,” head coach Art Baures said.

Seniors paced the boys in Gillette as Casey Carlton, Nate Berg and Michael Rotellini each took home all-conference honors.

“Michael Rotellini was a great competitor and showed everyone on our team that he was willing to run at the front of the races,” Baures said. “He came from behind in dramatic fashion to win the 800-meter run and he also passed several competitors in the 3200-meter run to place second. He ran from the front and didn’t give up the lead in the 1600-meter run. He was the fastest leg on the 4X800 Meter Relay and just led us from the beginning of the meet to the end.”

Carlton placed second in the 400-meter dash and fourth in the 200. Carlton also helped the SHS relay teams which were six for six, finishing in the top three places every race.

“He was the fastest leg on the 4X400 meter relay, and did a great job on the 4X100 meter relay” Baures said of Carlton. “He ran very well and showed everyone on our team that he is a great competitor.”

“Nate Berg was a very good athlete for the team in Gillette as he placed second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the long jump,” Baures added of the senior’s All-Conference performance.

“We also had two other athletes that did a great job in Nate Kane and Kyle Dietsche,” he said.

Gabby Edeen just missed All-Conference, running a 12.59-second third-place 100-meter dash. The lone Lady Bronc to take All-Conference was Shayla Christensen after she placed second in both shot put and discus.

“The throwers did a nice job of scoring points for us, and Shayla Christensen competed very well for the girls team,” Baures said. “She is the defending State Indoor Champion in the shot put and it is nice to have some momentum going into the State Outdoor Championships.”

Campbell County High School was first by a long ways with 206.5 points, but the SHS boys trailed East 105 to 106, paced by performances from underclassmen top to bottom on both the boys and girls side.

“It is very encouraging to have so many underclassmen that scored points for the girls team because we need them to perform well this week at the state meet.
