SHS girls reach state after shootout

SHERIDAN —  After 100 minutes of play and seven penalty kicks the Sheridan girls finally put Gillette away.

Their reward: a trip back to the 4A state tournament.

Sheridan had an up and down year, 3-7 in conference play, but positioned itself for two straight weekends of games with Gillette for their shot at a berth to state.

Thursday night in Gillette, their second game there in six days after falling 2-1 Friday, the Lady Broncs did what they needed to do.

“Really, for 100 minutes we controlled the game,” head coach Tom Racette said. “We weren’t always controlling the score, but we definitely controlled all aspects of the game. Their goal was their only real opportunity all game.”

Sheridan and Gillette battled to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation, and Robbi Ryan quickly scored in the first minute of extra time to put Sheridan ahead. Gillette would tie with about three minutes left in the second overtime period and force an even longer contest.

The Lady Broncs outlasted the Lady Camels 4-3 in the shootout.

Racette said Bailey McLean had an “outstanding game,” as did Ryan, who not only scored the go-ahead goal for SHS, but she also scored the first PK and then relieved McLean in goal, making three saves to help her team seal the win.

“We made it to state, and anything can happen going to state,” Racette said.

Sheridan plays Laramie at 6 p.m. Friday in Cheyenne in the 4A East Regional semis.

The Lady Broncs last year were a goal away from a 4A state title, finishing runner-up to Cheyenne Central. State is next weekend in Rock Springs.
