SHERIDAN — After both the SHS boys and girls teams played for last season’s 4A state soccer title, both teams are now fighting just to get back to the state tournament.
After a 2-1 loss in Gillette Friday night, the Broncs finished in the 4A East No. 4 spot and will travel to Cheyenne South High School Thursday where they’ll play No. 5 seed Cheyenne East in an elimination game. The winner gets an automatic state berth.
Gillette and Laramie locked up state bids, and Sheridan plays Gillette Saturday if they win Thursday. In the first two meetings between East and Sheridan, the Broncs won 2-1 at home and then played to a scoreless draw two weeks ago in Cheyenne.
For the girls, the Lady Broncs travel to Gillette for the second time in six days for their win-and-in game. Sheridan beat the Lady Camels 1-0 at home. On Friday, a close game went to the Lady Camels, 2-1, after a late strike broke a 1-1 tie.
For the first time in three years, the state tournament will not be held in Big Horn at the Equestrian Center. State soccer for 4A teams is set for May 16-18 in Rock Springs. The 3A tournament moves to Jackson.
