WEATHER FROM OUR SPONSORS

RANCHESTER — Tongue River Elementary School students will get to take a two-wheeled ride to school next week.
The Sheridan County Wellness Council is sponsoring “Bike to School Week” next week and several bike and bike-related activities are being held at the school.
Students prepared for the ride May 1 by going through a bicycle checklist and students who did not have the safety gear, were provided with helmets.
“It will reinforce with children to think about safety issues when they ride their bikes and be safety advocates for each other,” said Michele Fritz, executive director of the Wellness Council.
TRE students from kindergarten to fifth grade are also encouraged to keep track of their exercise, in whatever form, for a week beginning May 6. Students can then earn prizes for those who exercise the most.
“It also encourages activity —decreasing screen time and increasing activity,” Fritz said.
The highlight of the week is Wednesday when there will a bike parade from Tongue River Middle School to Tongue River Elementary School. Fritz said parents are encouraged to ride with their children and help their children decorate their bikes.
“Everyone needs to be active and involved,” Fritz said.
After school on that day, there will be a bike rodeo in which students can take part in obstacle courses and other activities.
“The kids are enthusiastic,” Fritz said. “When the weather is nice, they want to be outside more.”
She added that she hopes to spread the activity next year to schools throughout the county.
