Local schools honored by U.S. news

Three local high schools have been recognized for excellence by U.S. News & World Report.

Sheridan High School received a silver award this year, and had the second highest ranking in the state behind Jackson Hole High School. This is the second year the high school has received a silver award.

In addition, Big Horn High School and Tongue River High School were recognized as top schools, taking bronze medals. BHHS previously received bronze medals in 2012 and 2009.

More than 21,000 public schools across the country were analyzed by the report.

The judging process has three steps, determining whether a school’s students were performing better than statistically expected for the average student in the state, whether the school’s least-advantaged students were performing better than average for similar students in the state and which schools produced students who were college-ready using Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test data as benchmarks for success.

According to the U.S. News & World Report website, “…American Institutes for Research implemented U.S. News’s comprehensive rankings methodology, which is based on the key principles that a great high school must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college-bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.”
