WEATHER FROM OUR SPONSORS
There is something very exciting about a new project. They make me feel like a kid getting ready to go back to school. I suddenly feel the need to buy new notebooks, pens and folders — I must have these items to keep myself organized.
I can’t, after all, shove all of the notes and papers for this project into all of the other hundreds of folders I already have!
Yes, I know…insert nerd jokes here.
But projects really do give you a sense of purpose and if it is something you care about, they give you a major dose of motivation.
I’ve only just begun this new project but I’ve already learned a lot.
For example, I can’t do everything by myself. No matter how brilliant anybody thinks they are, having sounding boards, colleagues discussing ideas and shooting the bad ideas down is a healthy way to come up with the best product possible.
Collaboration is good for inspiration and camaraderie.
It has also been reinforced that Sheridan has some really great people willing to roll up their sleeves and get to work. This in itself is incredible and something we should be proud of every day.
The third lesson — one that isn’t new, but has been reinforced — is that friends can always be counted on to tell you the truth.
So I had what I thought was a great name for my project. Turns out it wasn’t that great. In fact, it was mostly awful and corny and probably never should have actually been said out loud. But, in my excitement I shared the name with a few friends.
Oh the looks I got! They went something like this…Really?! Why?! Oh, honey no.
I’m glad they told me the truth, otherwise the whole endeavour could have been quite embarrassing.
Finally, a lesson I’m sure many others have also learned along the way is that it never hurts to ask. I wanted to shoot big with this project and some of the names involved were a little intimidating. But, if you don’t ask, you’ll never get what you want. The worst somebody can (usually) tell you is “no.”
