Amsden management area winter range closure extended to May 15

DAYTON — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is extending the winter range closure on the Amsden Wildlife Habitat Management Area near Dayton. Amsden normally opens for human presence on May 1 but will remain closed until May 15 due to above average snowpack.
“It’s not looking like snow conditions on the face of the mountain are going to allow for adequate elk dispersal from the Amsden when it regularly opens,” Dayton Game Warden Dustin Shorma said.

“Keeping the area closed will encourage elk to continue using this area, rather than wandering onto neighboring private property. Elk are still depending on the unit for forage and security cover and having people entering the area puts added stress on these animals during their most difficult time of year.”

The delay in opening the area will temporarily impede the popular May 1 antler hunting tradition, but the department urges members of the public to respect the closure to keep the elk safe and allow for a successful antler hunting season.

“I know that some folks will be disappointed; however, keeping this elk herd healthy through this latest snow storm will ensure they’ll have shed antlers to look for in the future,” Shorma said.

The Kerns Wildlife Habitat Management Area near Parkman will open to human presence June 1.
