SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College Lady Generals postseason run expired after a 64-59 loss to Northwest College at the Region IX tournament Tuesday afternoon.
Like the Generals Saturday, the No 1-seeded SC women found themselves up against a team with a much lower record, but were unable to advance at the single-elimination tournament.
The Lady Generals dropped their quarterfinal game to the Lady Trappers (17-16) at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb., after beating them twice this season.
“It’s hard to beat a team three times,” head coach Frank McCarthy said Wednesday morning. “They’ve always played us close. We didn’t defend well and we didn’t shoot well. But some of the credit goes to them, they’ve been on a roll lately.
“The one game doesn’t really sum up our season, we had really good team chemistry, won our region, its just disappointing it’s over. The lows are really low, the highs are pretty high, but the lows are low in this business.”
The Lady Generals led early 16-7, but after Brodie Bennett picked up her second foul and sat down, Northwest took the lead. SC was able to cut that lead to four with a late shot before the half, but NWC came out strong in the second. The Lady Generals would get within one point, but two turnovers at the six-minute mark allowed the Lady Trappers to build their lead again. The Lady Generals trailed by three or four points for the rest of the way.
Milomilo Nanai scored 19 points and Jasmine Davis scored 13, but the Lady Generals were unable to weather four double-digit performances from the Lady Trappers. Brodie Bennett had eight points, three rebounds and three assists in her last game for SC. Maddie Forney scored nine points, and Josie Three Irons had eight points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Kayla Kiriau, with two points, was the only other Lady General to get in the scorebook.
Teams were even across the stat sheet:?SC had 42 rebounds to NWC’s 40, and shot 2 of 8 from the 3-point line while NWC?was 1-10. The Lady Generals complete the year 24-9, having won their 10th Region IX North title in the last 11 years. It’s the second year in a row they’ve been eliminated in the second round of the tournament.
