SHERIDAN — Operation Gelding, a clinic to provide low-cost horse castrations, will be held Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The clinic is hosted by Powder River Veterinary Hospital and Supply P.C. (PRVHS) /Y O Equine Ranch LLC at 4 McCormick Rd. in Sheridan.
All castrations will be performed by a veterinarian and deworming, Coggins tests and vaccinations are also available for an additional cost.
The clinic is coming to Sheridan through the efforts of Sheridan College agriculture student Cara Hopcraft and Dr. Candice Carden, DVM.
“My hope is that it will be something beneficial to the community,” said Hopcraft.
The clinic was started by the Unwanted Horse Coalition whose mission is “to reduce the number of unwanted horses and to improve (horse) welfare through education and the efforts of organizations committed to the health, safety and responsible care and disposition of these horses.”
Operation Gelding clinics address the problems associated with unwanted horses by castrating stallions to help prevent over-breeding. Stallion castration also produces a gentler horse, which is more ride-able, more trainable, and more sellable.
“We have seen these types of opportunities for area cats and dogs like the Second Chance Sheridan Cat Rescue Spay and Neuter event this (past) weekend, but we haven’t had these opportunities for our horse-owning community,” said SC Dean of Agriculture Dr. Ami Erickson. “We are happy to support Hopcraft’s and Carden’s effort in offering the Operation Gelding clinic.”
Anyone interested in participating in the clinic must pre-register with Hopcraft at firstname.lastname@example.org or 307-620-5786. Cost for the castration service is $50 per horse.
All horses must have two descended testicles (the vet reserves the right to deny castrating if this is not the case). They must be halter broke and able to be handled easily. Owners must be able to load and unload their horse without assistance. Owners are also responsible for handling their horse at all times during the day.
