SHERIDAN — Big Horn High School took second place at the 17th Annual Wyoming Academic Challenge State Tournament held at Central Wyoming College April 13. The team narrowly lost to East High School of Cheyenne, 160-150.
“It doesn’t get much closer than the two trophy rounds,” said WAC state director John Tate. “Each trophy round came down to the last question. This year was one of the most exciting finishes we have ever had. It made for a great tournament.”
Big Horn was honored with the small school state title for the first time. Team members were Andrew Schuster, Ben Warder, Christian Klepperich and Jack Roberts.
Sheridan and Tongue River High Schools were also well represented at the tournament. TRHS was represented by Owen Bensel, Sarah Maze, Donovan Powers and Cody Perkins. SHS was represented by Jake Witt, Sara Shahine and Maya Gilmone.
Warder of Big Horn and Bensel of TRHS were also named to Team Wyoming, which will compete against Team Montana at Sheridan College on June 20. Maze of TRHS is first alternate.
Warder, Schuster, Klepperich and Patrick McClurg of BHHS were also named academic all-state for their performances over the course of the WAC season, as well as Bensel and Maze of TRHS.
The WAC is hosted by the community colleges of Wyoming throughout the school year and sponsored by Fremont Beverages of Worland and Security State Bank of Basin, Gillette, Sheridan and Worland.
