Wild pony races a fan favorite at this year’s Sheridan WYO Rodeo

SHERIDAN — Every year at the rodeo, while contestants get themselves and their livestock ready for the next event, a specialty act is held to keep the crowd entertained. This year was no exception as the wild pony races were held for the first time ever.

Featuring five teams of three kids, each between 8-14 years old, two of them held onto the pony’s rope and halter, while the third tried to mount and ride the pony for as long as possible. The teams are timed on how long it takes the rider to mount the horse.

Two teams were crowd favorites this year; Team Sheridan, for obvious reasons, and the International Girls of Power — the winners of the event — comprised of three tough little cowgirls.

Team Sheridan had their pony slip right out of their hands Friday night, so they were given a second chance Saturday and came out with a score of 25.9 seconds.

Tavy Leno, 10, Jarrod Roberts, 14, and Coye Gregory, 9, all of Sheridan said that they hope to return next year to compete.

“We got the idea from saddle bronc riding, and it’s just something we’ve wanted to do,” Roberts said.

Roberts hopes that when he gets older, he will be competing in saddle bronc and team roping competitions as well.
