SHERIDAN — To put an official end to their 2013-14 season, the Sheridan College Lady Generals basketball team added two Superior Academic Achievement Award recipients to their 19-win team.
For the last 31 years, the National Junior College Athletic Association has been recognizing the academic success of its student-athletes with the annual awards. In 2013-14, 58,446 student athletes compete in 28 different sports. Of those athletes, 3.08 percent were recognized this year for their achievements in the classroom.
The NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement recognizes those student-athletes who finish the year with a 3.80-3.99 GPA. Sheridan College’s Kaila Willis and Morgan Wille both accomplished that feat last season.
Willis, a sophomore from Wheatland, finished the year with a 3.9 GPA, and Wille, a sophomore from Baggs, finished with a 3.85.
To go along with their national honors, Willis and Wille joined teammates Shae Bruursema, Eriika Erickson, Tiana Hanson, Phoebe Hinds, Katie Kuhn, Morgan Thiel, and Sierra Toms as Region Nine National Junior College Athletic Association Student-Athletic Award recipients.
The Lady Generals earned a 3.45 GPA as a team, placing them eighth in the nation for NJCAA All-Academic Women’s Basketball Teams.
“It’s pretty amazing to see these girls do so well,” Lady Generals coach Franky McCarthy said. “Nine girls received all-academic honors for the region. As a team we really excelled in the classroom while excelling on the court, too.”
This is the second time in the last five years that the Lady Generals have been recognized as a team for their academic achievements. The 2009-10 team finished first in the nation with a team GPA of 3.575.
