Jets split with Gillette Tues.

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Jets continued to make some progress on the baseball field on Tuesday but were only able to come away with one victory in their doubleheader against Gillette JV.
It has been a trend for the Jets all season long to split their doubleheaders, and the up and down play was in full effect on Tuesday in Gillette.
Jeff Shanor was on the mound for Sheridan in game one, and his ability to find the strike zone helped propel his team to a 5-4 win. Shanor pitched six solid innings, striking out nine Gillette batters.
After the Jets jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, Gillette scored three in the bottom of the third to jump ahead of the Jets. Sheridan bounced right back to take a 4-3 lead before Gillette tied the game in the fifth inning.
The game-winning run came in the top of the sixth inning for Sheridan, and Caleb Hoopes came in to relieve Shanor in the seventh inning to get the save.
“It was a good win for our ball club,” coach Ryan Murner said. “We continued to pick each other up when we had our errors.”
The rest of the night didn’t go very well for the Jets, as they seemed to hit a wall going into the second game of the doubleheader.
The Jets couldn’t get anything going at bat, only producing three hits for the game. Their problems at the plate made it easier for Gillette to make the adjustments they wanted, scoring seven runs to beat Sheridan 7-1.
“We struggled at the plate against their pitcher,” Murner said of his team’s inability to produce runs in game two. “We didn’t make our adjustments at the plate and got ourselves out constantly by swinging at poor pitches.”
It wasn’t all bad, though, as coach Murner was happy with his team’s pitching and is hopeful for improvements in the batter’s box.
“I thought we pitched good enough in both games, but offensively we had problems putting quality at bats together,” Murner said. “I believe we will continue to work hard and get better.”
The Jets take their 12-15 record into a brief break over the holiday weekend before taking the field for another doubleheader in Cody on July 8.
