Name released in Spring Creek Mine fatality

SHERIDAN — The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the man who died at the Spring Creek Mine north of Sheridan on Monday.

Stewart Orcutt, 58, of Sheridan died in a single haul truck incident on Monday at approximately 7 p.m. Cloud Peak Energy announced the incident Tuesday morning.

Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Amy Louviere said Tuesday that the 230-ton truck crashed through a berm at about 7:30 p.m. Monday, killing the driver.

Cloud Peak says the victim’s family has been notified.

Federal mine safety officials were on the scene. No other details were immediately available.

Spring Creek employs about 280 people and produced more than 17 million tons of coal in 2013.

The last reported fatality at the mine was in 2006.
