SHERIDAN — The rodeo season isn’t quite over for some Sheridan High School students, as a good week at the state finals qualified them for the National High School Finals Rodeo.
A plethora of high school athletes traveled to Douglas last week to compete in the Wyoming State Finals Rodeo. Top performances in the state finals meant qualifications for NHSFR in July.
Jeffery Zdziarski carried his success from the season into the state finals, coming home to Sheridan with a first- and second-place finish.
Zdziarski finished with 248.50 in bareback riding, making him the state champion and a national qualifier. His 170.50 in saddle-bronc riding was enough for a second-place finish and another qualification for nationals.
Zdziarski’s two scores were good additions to his season points total, giving him 4,463.440 for the year and placing him second in the boys all-around.
Brandt Ross will also be making the trip to nationals in July. His score of 167 was good enough for a third-place finish in tie-down calf roping.
As Ross and Zdziarski are locks for the national competition, a handful of other Sheridan riders qualified as alternates.
Shelby Mann’s 134 in pole bending and Whitney Simmons’s 125 in breakaway were both enough for fifth-place finishes, qualifying them as alternates in their events.
In the team roping event, Big Horn’s Wheaton Williams partnered with Casper’s Jerren Johnson to score 229 points and an alternate spot for nationals.
Sam Haskett scored a 60 in bull riding, only eight points behind the fourth-place finisher. Haskett will also be an alternate.
Sheridan’s Gabrielle Koltiska, whose sister will be competing in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo, was crowned queen at the state finals last Saturday.
The athletes that qualified will continue to practice before finishing their season at the NHSFR starting on July 13 in Rock Springs.
