SCFA, county plan several fairground improvements

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Fair Association approved its fiscal year 2015 budget Thursday night, planning for $554,850 in both revenues and expenditures.

Board members described the budget as very conservative in terms of projections for revenue, which include county general fund support, Optional One-Cent Sales Tax funding and lease fees.

The biggest expenditure for the SCFA is expected to be payroll, coming in at nearly 40 percent of the overall budget.

In other business, the SCFA board agreed to begin replacing windows in the pavilion in exchange for some consensus funding money the county plans to put toward other fairground improvements.

Those improvements will likely include a new water system and a heating system for the pavilion.

In addition, consensus funding could be used for concrete work in the grandstands and exhibit hall, upgrading of restrooms in the exhibit hall and grandstands and new siding and windows for the office.

The total consensus funds for the fairgrounds could total approximately $817,233.

Sheridan County Commissioner Mike Nickel said that the consensus fund list is not finalized, as discussions both within the county and with the municipalities in the area are ongoing.

“We just wanted to make sure we were going in the right direction,” Nickel said at Thursday’s meeting.

The SCFA also elected Brendon Kerns as the new vice chairman, following Ed Johlman’s resignation. The group also asked the Sheridan County commissioners to appoint another member to the board.

Fairgrounds Director Jamie Ringley said the season is in full swing, with a multitude of events keeping staff busy.
