WEATHER FROM OUR SPONSORS
Next weekend will be a big one in Sheridan. Yes, I know it is the weekend of Big Horn Country USA. Brantley Gilbert, Lady Antebellum, Big & Rich, Thomas Rhett, Joe Nichols and other famous artists will be in town.
But, there is another event in town that is sure to be fun, entertaining and uplifting — Relay for Life.
According to the Wyoming Department of Health, incidence and mortality rates for cancer in the state continue to be lower than the national rates. But, more than 2,000 people were still diagnosed with some form of cancer in 2011 in Wyoming.
The top five types of cancer seen in 2010 in the state were: prostate, female breast, lung/bronchus, colorectal and bladder. The top five cancers in terms of mortality were lung, colorectal, ill-defined, breast cancer and cancer of the pancreas.
Chances are, you know somebody who has been diagnosed with cancer; you probably know more than one.
The cause Relay for Life supports is one that is near and dear to all our hearts.
The event — set to begin at 6 p.m. Friday and last until Saturday morning — will include many heartwarming moments and opportunities to remember those who’ve lost their battles with cancer.
For example, many survivors often participate in the event — sharing stories and hope. Luminarias also honor those we’ve lost, those who won and those whose fight with cancer continues.
But the event isn’t all somber.
This year’s theme is focused on superheros. Many who participate in Relay will likely don their best costumes and capes, race around the track and prompt all sorts of laughter and smiles.
So far, 11 teams with a total of 79 participants have raised $19,000 to help fight cancer in the Sheridan area. Let’s help them out.
Even if you are participating in one of the many events going on in town next weekend, stop by Kendrick Park to show your support for the Relay for Life teams. Whether it is 6 p.m., midnight after the big show or 2 a.m. — they’ll be there.
