Dayton to repair town hall, hire help to digitize records

DAYTON — Dayton Town Council made an adjustment to the town’s budget for fiscal year 2014-2015 at its meeting Monday.
A $10,000 allotment was added to pay for refacing the east and west side of Town Hall with new siding since the old siding is falling into disrepair, Town Clerk Linda Lofgren said. Another $10,000 was added to the budget to enable town staff to have historical and current records professionally scanned by Cloud Peak Scanning.
Cloud Peak Scanning is a professional scanning service that helps individuals, businesses, nonprofits and government entities to “go paperless” by scanning documents stored in file cabinets and boxes and putting them on an external hard drive. The electronic documents are easier to search, and eliminating boxes of files frees up storage space, co-owner Nadine Gale said at an earlier presentation to the council.
The additions bring the town’s total budget to $831,620. The budget was passed on second reading and will require one more reading June 18 to become final.
In other business, the council passed an ordinance approving eight mills to be assessed for fiscal year 2015, which is the standard number of mills. The annual agreement for services with the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office was also passed at a price of $18,000. Sheriff deputies help the town enforce ordinances and provide general law enforcement services, as well, Lofgren said.
“The town’s not obligated to pay them, but it was a decision the council made many years ago because they appreciate so much what the sheriff’s office does,” Lofgren said.
Ordinance 386 passed on third reading. It will amend the water and sewer ordinance to delete the penalty portion for late payment of utility bills. Terry and Sonja Caywood won the Yard of the Month for May. Their yard can be seen at 317 West Second St.
Outgoing Junior Councilman Samuel Martin was recognized for his time and attendance at meetings over the last several months.
