CrossFit crew takes first at state competition

SHERIDAN — Cloud Peak CrossFit took first place honors at a statewide CrossFit competition this past weekend.

The Second Annual CrossFit Affiliate Competition was held in Casper and featured 17 teams from CrossFit gyms around Wyoming. This year’s first place finish is far cry from the gym’s showing at last year’s event.

crossfit-crew-take-first“We went from being in last place last year to first place this year,” said co-owner and competitor Seth Larson. “Last year we were the newest CrossFit gym in the state and we got fifth out of five teams. We’ve improved a lot in one year’s time. Everybody worked really hard. I was really proud of all our members that went down.”

Larson said three teams of six member went to the event, along with more than a dozen supporters. Two teams competed in the higher level Prescribed Division and one team competed in the entry level Scaled Division.

The Scaled Division team took fourth place and the Prescribed Division teams first and 10th places.

Members of the first place team included Seth Larson, Tyler Harnish, Zach Harnish, Fielding Phillips, Erika Sanders and Meagan Moore.

“We did really well,” Larson said. “It was a lot fun. It was hard but it was a lot of fun. We are all very excited. We realized after the second workout (out of five) we were going to be in the running if we kept it up, so it worked out really well.”

“It incorporates gymnastics, weight lifting movements and cardiovascular exercise all together to create varied, high intensity functional movement,” he explained, about what CrossFit entails. “It is pretty intense.”

Larson started Cloud Peak CrossFit in his garage in 2011. Since then, the business has grown to more than 100 gym members and relocated into a new building. The business has now outgrown even the new building and a 1,200 square foot expansion is planned.

Though Larson said the workouts can be intense, the movements and the weight amounts can be adjusted to accommodate any physical ability. More information can be found at www.cloudpeakcrossfit.com.
