Big Horn girls track takes first in Upton

SHERIDAN — The Big Horn High School girls’ track team took first place 2014 Bulldog Bobcat Invite in Upton Friday, while the boys celebrated two first place finishes.

Jayden Mirich set a new school record for high jump with a leap of 5-feet 1.5-inches. Coach Kirk McLaughlin said the record setting performance began on the wrong mark.

“Someone else had taped a J, and she had taped a J, and she picked the wrong one,” McLaughlin said indicating it was a happy mistake that McLaughlin began in a new place. “She got a school record off of it.”

McLaughlin said McLaughlin had already won the competition after clearing 5-feet, and chose to go up one and a half inches with the specific intent to break the school’s existing record. She cleared the bar on her second attempt.

Mirich also won the girls 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.43.

Lydia Mayer placed third in the girls high jump with a jump of 5-feet, 8-inches.

Other notable performances at the meet included a first place finish in the girls’ triple jump and second place finish in the long jump for Cassidy Enloe.

Morgan Nance took second in the triple jump, and Emily Blaney claimed fourth place.

“Enloe and Morgan had a great day of jumping,” McLaughlin beamed.

In the races, Bailey Bard placed first i the 300 meter hurdles and second in the 100 meter dash, Ashley Fox got second in the 200 meter dash.

The girls’ 4×100 relay team of Bard, Fox, Nance and Enloe took first with a time of 52.34.

On the boys side, Mason Lube threw the shot put 42-feet, 8.5-inches for a first place finish.

Christian Mayer won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.34 and Sophomore Dillon Lyons took third in the long jump.

The team will take the rest of the weekend off and leaves Thursday to travel to regionals.
