SCSD2 employees, board members, students recognized

SHERIDAN — There were several people honored at the Sheridan County School District 2 Board of Trustees meeting Monday night.
Johann Nield, a representative of the Wyoming School Boards Association, was present to recognize two sets of individuals.
First, he formally thanked Chairman Richard Bridger and Trustees Hollis Hackman and Scott Hininger for their liaison and advocacy services during the recent contentment of the legislation.
“Through you, we passed the bills we wanted passed and stopped those we wanted stopped and I thank you for that,” Nield said.
Nield then presented Trustee Molly Steel and Vice-Chairman Ann Perkins with certificates of being Certified Board Members.
Nield stated that the WSBA provides training for board members and assigns points for hours of completed training and the two board members had each earned more than 100 points to receive the honor.
Next, Sheridan High School Principal Dirlene Wheeler announced that the school had again been named a Silver Award school by the U.S. News and World Report and thanked the teachers and administration for their contributions to that honor.
Wheeler then introduced SkillsUSA advisors Kathleen Pilch and Heidi Richins who presented four students who had won medal winners at the state competition.
In addition to recognizing the medals of James Dow, Meradith Hamilton, Hannah Will and Zaffary Hein, the advisors recognized medal winners not present and the chapter as a whole for taking runner-up in the 4A division in only their second year of competition.
Will and Michael Garriffa will each travel to Kansas City in June to compete in the national competition.
Will stated that her mentor advised her that the cosmetology competition she took first place in is comparable to the state board exams required to work in the field and so she was especially grateful for the opportunity to take part in something that directly prepared her for her chosen career.
Assistant Superintendent Terry Burgess was also recognized for becoming the new President-Elect of the Wyoming High School Activities Association. Superintendent Craig Dougherty said after just recently joining the board, next year Burgess will be heading up the reclassification committee and his swift progression on the board is a reflection of his many accomplishments.
In other business:
• A brief accreditation update was presented by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Assessment Tom Sachse, addressing some new concerns the district has stemming from the recent waiver request withdrawal by the Wyoming Department of Education from the U.S. Department of Education regarding the No Child Left Behind Act. Attempts to receive additional information on this matter were halted this morning as Sachse stated he was directed to cancel the scheduled interview with The Press and have any questions submitted in writing to the district Human Resources Coordinator Cody Sinclair, though the accreditation update memo states “If you have any questions or comments about this memo, please don’t hesitate to call 674-7405, ext. 5104 or e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.”
• A capital construction update presented by Dougherty stated that the Coffeen School construction timeline is still on track and committees formed under SHS Activities Director Don Julian will seek private, district and state funds for locker room/sports training and the performing arts areas of their focus.
• Public voting concluded Saturday on the proposed 2015-2016 school calendar and “Calendar A” — which had the students beginning school Sept. 1 and concluding June 3 — won 480 of the 778 votes and was approved by the board as such.
• A donation of $3,000 from Chris Walton and Tammara Duhn was accepted by Meadowlark School and will either be used to offset the cost of forthcoming Web-based reading programs or additional reading resources for the school.
• An out-of-country travel request was approved for Mario Montano to take the SHS Spanish Club on a trip to Costa Rica over Spring Break 2015.
• District Business Manager Roxie Taft reported that though the lunch service program saw a decline in student participation last year after implementing the healthy food program this year’s participation is back up to 54 percent of K-12 lunch participation.
• The audit firm of Porter, Muirhead, Cornia and Howard was again retained for the district’s 2013-2014 financial statement audits at the cost of $38,000, which reflected no increase over the prior year’s fee.
• Principals Mitch Craft, Sean Wells and Wheeler each answered questions from the board regarding their revised student handbooks after which all handbooks were approved by the board.
