Kraft’s Jewelry celebrates 50th anniversary

SHERIDAN — A staple business on Sheridan’s Main Street is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Sunday. Kraft’s Fine Jewelry has been operated in the same location and by the same family for the entirety of its tenure.

Richard Kraft, 82, grew up in Wisconsin and was trained as a watchmaker in Illinios. He and his wife, Marjorie Kraft, came to Sheridan — sight unseen — to take a job at an existing jewelry company that, at the time, existed next to the Mint Bar. Kraft worked for Howard Jorgenson for approximately five years before opening his own jewelry dealership.

The current owner, Steve Kraft, helped his father build the display cases still used in the store today. He began working in the business in 1979, and after a short stint operating a jewelry store in Buffalo, he returned to the Sheridan location to continue his family’s tradition. He bought out his father in 1994, and hopes one day that his son, Spencer Kraft, will do the same.

Kraft said running a jewelry dealership can be a dicey business, and he credits his family’s work ethic and persistence with the fact the store has been around five decades.

In celebration of the business’s 50th anniversary, Kraft Jewelry will be hosting several events throughout the month.

“Sheridan is a great community,” Kraft said. “A person could earn a lot more money in a big community, but nobody would have a quality of life like Sheridan has.”
