SHERIDAN — The 31st annual Best Ranger Competition in Fort Benning, Ga., was held April 11-13 and 1st Lt. John Steger of Big Horn competed.
Less than 1 percent of all rangers are eligible to participate in the event which consisted of Airborne Infantry Rangers in 51 two-man teams.
The event begins with a 60-hour endurance event which eliminates half the teams. The final 26 teams compete in events including obstacle courses, day and night land navigation, parachute drops, rifle, pistol and machine gun marksmanship, a 20-mile night rucksack march, buddy runs, swimming, rope climbing and rappelling and more.
Steger and his teammate 1st Lt. Shaun Looney represented the 10th Mountain Division of the Army and placed 15th overall. Steger is the son of Tom and Linda Steger of Big Horn.
