SHERIDAN — Sheridan’s Gabby Edeen and Maddy McClure took first place finishes in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash respectively Tuesday at the Gary Benson Invitational.
McClure also prequalified for state.
“This is a tough meet, some of the toughest competition in the state came here,” SHS track coach Art Baures said. “For the girls to place first is awesome. Their performance was outstanding.”
Baures noted that Edeen and McClure take their roles on the track team seriously.
“Their leadership is unique,” Baures said. “Not only do they lead when they compete, but they also lead off the field. Others look up to them and are willing to listen and follow them. It is a unique style of leadership that is fun to watch at work.”
In other events, Peyton Bomar qualified for state in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.83 placing third at the meet.
“Peyton has done really well for a freshman,” Baures said. “She does everything we ask her to do, and competes at her best each time.”
Baures said Aaron Campbell helped lead the boys team and placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.82. He competed at the Billings Invite last weekend and finished with the same time.
“Campbell had a solid, over-the-top performance both this meet and last meet,” Baures said. “It is hard to get the same time two meets in a row.”
According to Baures, Micah Sweeney has come out of nowhere in the past few meets, repeatedly putting in solid performances. He placed third in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4.50.83 on Tuesday.
Ethan Hall also improved his personal record by two feet in the shot put at Tuesday’s meet with a distance of 46 feet, 1 inch.
“The team capitalized on some of their strengths at this meet,” Baures said. “ The relay teams did exceptional well. Each week we are working on individual skills and finding areas to capitalize on.”
Sheridan’s track team will host the Dan Hansen Invite Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. Tongue River and Big Horn will also compete in the event set to be held at SHS.
