Man pleads not guilty on multiple heroin charges

SHERIDAN — A Sheridan man was arraigned in 4th Judicial District Court Thursday morning for three felony drug charges. Casey Gariffa, 24, pleaded not guilty to intent to deliver, conspiracy to deliver and delivery of a controlled substance — heroin.

Gariffa was arrested Feb. 19 after a traffic stop. A police search of the vehicle he was driving turned up seven grams of black tar heroin, more than $1,000 in cash, a professional-grade scale and other drug paraphernalia.

In addition to the items collected at the time of Gariffa’s arrest, police had been working with an informant who had tipped them off that Gariffa was making a trip to Oregon to pick up the drug and bring it back to Sheridan.

Investigators watched Gariffa for several days before his arrest and believe he sold the heroin in Sheridan for $250 per gram.

Because Gariffa pleaded not guilty, Judge John Fenn scheduled a jury trial for Sept. 3.

Fenn also modified Gariffa’s bond, which was previously set at $10,000 cash only. While the option to pay the full cash amount is still viable, Fenn agreed to allow for a $2,500 corporate surety bond. In other words, Gariffa could pay a bondsman and be released from jail before his trial, and if Gariffa does not appear, the bondsman could send a bounty hunter after him.

As of this morning, Gariffa was still in custody at the Sheridan County Detention Center. He has obtained legal representation from Tucker Ruby of Goddard, Wages and Vogel, a Buffalo-based law firm.
