Sheridan College rodeo team takes first over weekend

SHERIDAN — Sophomore Taygen Schuelke led the Sheridan College rodeo team to a team title at the rodeo hosted by Eastern Wyoming College this past weekend.

The men’s team won with 670 points outscoring their opponents by 230 points. In the region they are sitting in third place.

“We had numerous athletes that were just out of making the short round,” head coach Marc Gilkerson said.

Schuelke won the all-around title with 430 points. Schuelke holds first place in the all-around race and is third in the region in saddle bronc and bull riding.

Schuelke won the bull riding competition in the long round with 78 points and short round with 84 points, giving him the average win. He placed second in the long round in saddle bronc with 75 points and placed fourth in the short round with 67 points leading him to second place in the average.

He also placed second in team roping with his partner Lane Foster in the long round with a time of 7.9 seconds. In the short round they legged up taking fifth with a time of 14.2 seconds. They ended up placing second in the average.

Zeke Thurston won the saddle bronc riding in the long round with 81 points, scoring a 73-point ride in the short round. The performance meant Thurston won the average and is now ranked first in the region.

Both Tayte Clark and Dillion Barkshire made it to the short round in saddle bronc. Placing third in the long round, Clark got bucked off in the short round bringing him down to fifth in the average. Barkshire scored 64 points in the long round splitting sixth, but missed his bronc out in the short round.

Annie Novotny is sitting eighth in the average in barrel racing making it to the short round with a 16.09 second run. In the short round she placed fourth with a 16.13 second run.

Jayne Lauweryssen won the long round in goat tying with a time of 7.2 seconds but fell just shy in the short round. She managed to tie her goat in 10.6 seconds. She made it to the short round in break away roping with a time of 3.9 seconds splitting 10th.

Cashlee Cunningham tied her goat in the long round in 7.7 seconds placing seventh in the short round and average.

Scheulke is off to the Ram National Circuit Finals this week in Oklahoma to compete in the bull riding.

“The hard work is paying off and we look forward to competing this weekend in Fort Collins, Colorado, at the CSU rodeo,” Gilkerson said.

The SC rodeo team will begin competition in Fort Collins on Friday.
