Sheridan track teams take fourth, sixth at Cody invite

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School track and field team had a good showing at the Yellowstone Sports Medicine Invite on Saturday with several finishes in the top eight.
“The Yellowstone Medicine Invite in Cody was a good start to the outdoor season with good competition from the teams that attended,” head coach Art Baures said. “We had warm temperatures and very windy conditions but the athletes had a great opportunity to start the season with some good marks. This meet was a good start and we will build from this point to the state meet in May.”
Sheridan girls team placed fourth and the boys team placed sixth overall with many individual athletes placing in the top eight.
Mariah Grant finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.66, while Maddy McClure placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.11 and fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.75. Cassandra Robinson placed fifth in the 800-meter dash at 2:54.92, and third in the 1600-meter dash with a time of 6:17.92.
“Mariah Grand and Maddy McClure did very well in their respective events in the short and long sprints,” said Baures. “Katie Campbell was our best hurdler on the day.”
Xiomara Robinson placed second in the 1600-meter dash with a time of 6:09.93 and third in the 3200-meter dash with a time of 13:44.21. Campbell finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 55.69 and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.78. Marissa Hegy placed second in the pole vault, Shayla Christensen placed third in the shot put and discuss, and Afton Sami placed fifth in the discuss.
The girls relay team made up of Grant, Hegy, Megan Culver and McClure placed third in the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:39.21.
The boys also had several athletes place in the top eight.
Brian Kjerstad finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.48 and fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12:38. Taylor Bruso finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.30 and fourth in the 1600-meter dash with a time of 5.06.19.
Collin Cundy finished seventh in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12.52.66 and eighth in the 1600-meter run with a 5.34.51. Tyler Julian placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.27 and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.41. Ethan Hall placed fouth in shot put.
The boys 4×400 relay team of Kjerstad, Adam Berry, Cameron Craft and Bruso placed third with a time of 4.00.51.
The boys were led by upperclassmen Julian, Kjerstad, Bruso and Ethan Hall, Baures noted.
“Many of the athletes will return to the team this week and we should be at full strength this week when we travel to Newcastle on Thursday,” Baures said. “We will begin to take a good look at the relays and how our athletes will fit together as a team this season.”
