BIG HORN — Big Horn track coach Kirk McLaughlin said he has a solid overall team this year.
“We should have a bright season with individual stars and overall team success,” he said.
McLaughlin observed that the boys have depth in the throwing events and have the potential to score points for the team. There are a bunch of new faces that will help the team in the sprints, jumps and distance events. Christian Mayer a top athlete has returned to the team. He has placed second in the 100-meter dash, fourth in the 400-meter dash and fourth in triple jump at state.
“Christian Mayer has had a great offseason and will be one of the favorites to win the 100-meter dash as well as the other events he competes in,” McLaughlin said.
Kris Johnson, Mason Lube and Richard Stanley in throwing are also athletes McLaughlin expects to contribute this year.
On the girls side there are five state placers returning from the third place team a year ago.
Jadyn Mirich was the state champ in the 100 hurdles, second place in the 300 hurdles and third place in the high jump.
“Jadyn Mirich will be one of the top 100 hurdlers in the state and is the favorite to win the race at the 2A level,” McLaughlin said.
Ashley Fox was fourth in the 200 and sixth in the 800. Teammate Bailey Bard took sixth in the 200 and seventh in the 400, while McKenzie Greenish took sixth in the 100 hurdles.
Morgan Nance in the jumping competitions and Colleen Swan in the distance events are top athletes who should help the team this year, McLaughlin said. Ashley Fox is coming off a successful indoor season. She placed in three events at the 4A level during the state indoor track championships.
Big Horn will begin spring competition Friday at the Jerry Campbell meet in Buffalo before traveling to Gillette April 5.
